Like the thread title says, there's some music that everyone else seems to love but I don't. I don't have their albums, I switch stations if I hear it, my eyes glaze over when yet another thread starts up about how great the remaster of the remastered tapes begins...get a grip I wanna yell it's elevator muzak! :p

Yep, I know there's a lot of elevator muzak a lot of Mall muzak in there but ...hey that's where this stuff tends to end up or on baby boomer FM stations.
Now don't get angry, don't get cranky if your favourite music appears in someone's list...just chill and write your own. This is just a thread for people who mightn't like what everybody else likes. Some harmless fun if you like.
You could of course put an alternative to your disliked band/singer/musician in brackets. Even though I didn't, feel free to do so yourself.
there's music i don't like just because... but i still think it's good. BUT then there's music that i don't (IMHO) think it took a lot of effort to write/compose/perform. and that's NOT good. if very little thought went into it, i don't care who likes it, etc. ALSO, that takes the spotlight away from so many amazingly gifted musicians who have dedicated their lives to mastering one or more disciplines within the arts (and are probably hoping to make a living from it). there's this disco tune i would rather not have the "composer" making tons of money from- LMFO- Party Rock Anthem comes to mind... but it is kinda catchy...
OMG. I'm almost with you but I like Steely Dan and I think the Stones Excile on Main Street is quite the accomplishment. The Doors boil my blood. I used to like The Eagles but got sick of them years ago. Oddly my dislike of The Eagles transcended into a total hatred of all Californian music. I still like the tunes that Timothy B Schmidt sings but that's probably because there are very few of them.
Too many artists to list, so in general, Rap (hip-hop) Country Opera Pretty much any of that crap that passes for music that they play at weddings nowadays. 3 weddings in the last year, sheesh!!
Let's see, you like Grand Funk Railroad but you dislike Johnny Winter. Man, I know this is just for fun, but it's amazing how two people can live in different musical universes. Agree about boy bands; 'though.
Well to be fair I really like Countdown To Ecstasy and it took me years to work out why I only really liked this album and a couple of tracks off their first...Jeff'Skunk' Baxter...end of story
and yeah your right Exile on Mainstreet is good but it gets lost under the mountains of dross the geriatrics have put out over the millennia.
I watched a recent youtube clip of Johhny Winter, I think it was live in Tokoyo or Japan somewhere and the guitarist who did an intro for a couple of minutes and then started saying..."put your hands together for the one an only...." yada yada yada...was better than JW!
Rickie Lee Jones. I'm fine with others that seem to generate a lot of dislike: Diana Krall and Patricia Barber, for instance. I love Ella and Sarah at their best, and Eva Cassidy and Holly Cole. But Rickie Lee's voice and (especially) mannerisms drive me nuts. I have many of her albums -- hope springs eternal and all that -- but obviously haven't cracked the code.
The local FM stations have burned me out on a plethora of good songs and artists. Now that I listen to internet radio it's not nearly as bad as it was. I can hear a song that I deplore on internet radio thrown in behind some songs and/or artists I've never heard of and I tend to like them again. Makes me feel better about the whole thing because for a while I felt like I was just getting grumpy and cantankerous. -JD
@Thelid I saw Grand Funk when they played for free at an Atlanta mini-Wookstock. Afterwards, one of the people I went with took off a day or two of work just to listen to their album continuously. I didn't relate, but to each their own.
Santana is one that doesn't connect for me. So sincere, so technically good, that squealing high-pitch guitar...yawn.
Funny enough, I find Snorah Jones pleasant enough. Viridian
"Snorah" Jones. Perfect description. I have tried to listen to "Come Away With Me" numerous times but always find myself dozing off by the third or fourth track. Have never, not once, made it through the entire album. I do have a copy of "New York City" by The Peter Malick Group, featuring Norah Jones, which is a good listen. There really are way too many to list them all.
Aerosmith. Their music is so shallow it isn't even funny. Especially their stuff from the 80's and forward. Yeah they're having a good time, but their faking it all the way.
Rap. Country. Most Pop. Oldies in permanent rotation. Classic Rock in permanent rotation. Anything KROQ plays in their rotation. It's been over a decade since they lost their touch.
I'm amazed how anyone can still listen to any of the older stuff like god himself decreed it. Where's the advancement? The progress? I've went years without resorting to listening to what I grew up which makes it enjoyable every now and then, but it's momentary at best.
New neural connections have to be made and music is the best way to do it. Older, repetitive bile just numbs the brain. YMMV. One must expand horizons lest all they see and hear is close, immediate, bland, stale and limited.
Great thread. I have a few of my "favorites"; I don't claim their music sucks, but I personally just don't get it at all, and don't understand why they are as popular as they are. There are also entire genres that I cannot stand such as opera, indie rock, or country-western. Then there are sounds I don't even consider music such as techno, rap, and whatever they played at Sam Goody's I walked into last week; best I can describe it, it was a combination of bad disco music from the late '70s and the type of music Ace of Base was playing, whatever it was classified as. Doubtless, it was a top selling CD. Horrifying.
Here's my list, just off the top of my head:
1. Rolling Stones - a few good songs, majority just mediocre; never understood what made "Satisfaction" a rock'n'roll anthem. 2. Bob Dylan - how can anyone stand that nasal, whiny, screeching voice is a mystery to me. 3. Steely Dan - just sounds cheesy, song after song. 4. Radiohead - tried hard to get into their music, but just can't. 5. Greatful Dead - just so bland and boring; sounds like a dive bar music. Was it just the drug use that made them so popular until today? But why?
I will also admit that I'm surprised at some of the picks in this thread (Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Fleetwood Mac are the most surprising to me), but it just confirms how subjective and personal music tastes are. That said, there is music I don't get, and there is music that just plainly and objectively sucks, and to me shows lacks of refinement in someone's tastes. Easy listening, soft jazz, new age, almost all of best-selling music today to me is not even subject to a debate; it objectively blows, and I feel bad for those who can't hear it. It's like not being able to taste the difference between great Scotch and cheap Bourbon; you can't debate it.
Ha ha! Some great replys guys and no aggro either which is great. Yeah it's all subjective isn't it and I'm not gonna pay out someone for likeing Dianna Krall or The Stones or Barry Manilow or that woman they make the horse jokes about...each to his own.
I'm just glad to see i'm not the only one who dont like a lot of old mainstream music...yeah I like GFR but it's an occasional thing, the kind you chuck on your system when yer kicking back and a few cold beers are hitting the spot and the handbrakes either away or she's in a good mood! Ya know what I mean.
But most other times I like to keep exploring and someone said above ...internet radio has been a blessing hasn't it, you canjust tune in to the most obscure music being played by stations you've never heard of and it opens your eyes up your ears actually but you know what I mean.
Last time i did a speaker audition in a shop the young dude pulled out DSOTM and I just rolled my eyes and told him to put the cd I'd brought along on...he was gobsmacked by the sound and the production values: The music your wondering? An obscure East London Jazz/acid/Nu/beat/soul/house grouping with fantastic production values...now that's what i'm chasing all the time...something new. Can be hard to find but is doubly pleasurable when found.

I understand a lot of entries and of course don't agree with many but that's just how music is. What I do not understand is how you cannot like music from an entire country!? To say you don't like any music from Australia is a bit extreme. I have music from 2 Aussie artists(The Waifs & John Butler Trio) and they don't sound anything similar to each other.

I bought a few second hand cd's for about 5 bucks in mint condition and they arrived in the post well packaged and in immaculate mint condition..one was unopened, completely minty. I'm listening to my first ever recording by Eva Cassidy and I'm wondering what all the fuss is about? She died young(tragically?)and did three albums[?]. Yep she has a nice voice and the acoustic guitar is nice and a couple of the arrangements...but gee whiz, I dont find a lot there that represents 'Icon' status. Do you guys?
Reading this thread inspired me to go read the billboard top 100... I can't say I know more than 10 or 15 songs, and none of those are even remotely listenable. What a shame
Since we're blaspheming, Clapton (great player, boring music), Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd. Keep being told I should like them but cant. Really dont get Floyd. I listen to utube quite a lot (type in "full concert" and a ton of stuff comes up. Tried listening to a PF concert the other day and gave up after 15 minutes.
Nodding my head at a lot of choices here and also noting that the majority of them are pretty long in the tooth.
Clapton is pretty boring isn't he but he's forgiven as he was the mastermind behind ' Concert for George' and that was a ripper!
Just tried some Winston Marsarlis(wrong spelling I know) for the first time, it's a live concert and I was somewhat underwhelmed by it all. Makes you not want to try the rest of an album when you pull it off after the first track.
Ragge; to my ears most of it sounds like a never ending loop of boom, pop, tch, tch. I also don't care for all those melancholy, flat singing female Brazilian Jazz vocalists. To each his own, YMMV, etc.,etc..
My test is: have I ever bought an album? If so, do I continue to listen to it? On that score, your list coincides with mine. I would add Sinatra to that list (Tony Bennett is NOT I repeat NOT on the list) and the blues as a genre.

You may not care for some of them but have you really listened to all of them or is it just the melancholy ones you dislike? :) Yeah, there are a lot of gringos that don't like the Brazilian sound but truly there are some really great Brazilian female vocalists and it ain't all melancholy. But I hear you, and you aren't the first to complain. Most of the audiophile guys I know don't like it either.
