@lanx0003 ....nahh, Mac is too mired in admiring themselves to stretch their product line into something truly uselessly useless like mere foodstuffs.  They've obviously lost out on been 'hip' with the 'new thang' vibe that'll appeal to the truly couch-bound outside the shrink's orrifice.

@asvjerry ....I think Mac should tweak it into a pizza toaster for those delicious heat 'n eat snacks....paired with a Mac-branded Keurig.....

Frankly, that’s a terrific business idea. Make it functional instead of just an empty box. The volume knob could serve as a dial to adjust temperature, and so on. An industrial designer can figure out the details. You might want to reach out to Mac about this idea before they come up with it themselves.

I know a retired NHL player who has a McIntosh system snd nost certainly would buy it.

I live in the Pacific Northwest. However, I love the rainy weather. I look forward to a good few weeks of rain. I light a fire, read, listen to music. It is wonderful. No light box needed for me.

I also own about every high end waterproof / breathable parka and jacket made by Arcteryx and Shower Pass makes.

McIntosh knows that a lot of their disciples will buy anything that says "McIntosh" on it, regardless of whether it is obscenely overpriced.

I am only surprised that it doesn't have a blue  meter on it to tell you how full it is.

Buy one?  Nope, i still have a pair.  I designed and made them in the 60's to sell to rock groups for use in small venus.   In those days I even etched my own circuit boards and built the wood cabinets. Perhaps because I used military surplus Triacs, they still work fine.  Total parts cost was about $20 in those days, and would probably be about the same today but with much higher power capability and better finish.   I'd suggest making your own and buying the McIntosh faceplate of your choice on eBay. You could probably even get actual Mac VU meter dispaly parts the same way and drive them from your preamp output and still save yourself $1500 !     Or, do what I do now and just close your eyes, lean back and enjoy the music instead.

I have a Realistic light box I picked up at a church fair.  I cleaned it up and it works great.  Old school better than overpaying for a name box.

Three points:

  1. +1 @ghdprentice :   He most eloquently describes my thoughts on both McIntosh and the spend.
  2. As an audiophile, why would you introduce another unnecessary source of EMI into your mains and system.  LED lights within this box  illuminate with current switching technology, and as such, have driver circuits and power supplies within that generate high-frequency noise (EFI) when rapidly switching current to illuminate.  Some high end companies have gone to the extent of having critical listening modes which bypass didplay lighting to avoid this like my streamer/server and integrated amp.
  3. Why spend $1700 on much overpriced marketing ploy to establish attitudinal and behavioral loyalty.  Attitudinal loyalty reflects the emotional and cognitive commitment a consumer has toward a brand, including their preferences and intentions. Behavioral loyalty, on the other hand, refers to the tangible actions taken by consumers, such as repeat purchases and ongoing engagement. By marketing this light, those who get hooked on the bait will remain loyal and not consider other brands on new purchases to maintain the brand look and feel.  McIntosh is expert on design (example: blue logo) to psychologically establish brand loyalty.

Don’t be hypnotized by the Mc marketing department and don’t introduce an unnecessary source of EMI.  Spend on an improvement to affect SQ positively.

@BDP24 , I wanna see your playlist.  Maybe Itchicoo Park and some Iron Butterfly?  Early Pink Floyd?

I have the clock you might want to look at that.i do see them used on occasion.enjoy the music

If you look at my system in virtual systems you will see that I do have one. BUT, mine is one of the original dealer units they used in their showroom displays of Mac gear. This was way back in the 70’s and 80’s.  It’s just a box. No storage space and it uses a small fluorescent tube fixture for the light. The best part of the story is that I got it for free. Well at no extra charge really. I was buying a fairly sizable upgrade and the dealer included it in the package of gear.  I love it. It’s so cool. But would I pay $1,700 for one?  Nope. They’re out of their minds. I would really love to have the clock that looks like a small amplifier. But again, they’re out of thier minds wanting $1,800 for it.

I am a fan of McIntosh , have two amps and am happy with a McIntosh Mug given to me by a dealer. That works fine and I use the 1700.00 towards my next purchase.

I would imagine that no one has ever paid $1700 for the box. Probably a heavily discounted item for the dealer to looks like he is really looking out for you. Definitely a get if the rest of the system is McIntosh. Useful for hiding small non-McIntosh boxes, such as a dac or switch.

McIntosh makes AMPLIFIERS really. Mostly all the rest of their products are Meh...So No I wouldnt buy a light for $1700 of their logo. Unless I was a MAC dealer!

I own a McIntosh integrated and I would not spend a tenth of that price for a lifestyle light box product from them.  I enjoy the integrated immensely but find some of the lifestyle products a bit silly, especially at the premium they ask.

Deep:

We used the first light you posted in our vomitorium.

Set up a few of these in your room at 30 bucks a piece, play some chicago house music and start dancing. It's more fun.

I wanna get one of those "black light" light bulbs they're making now, to relive the late-'60's. But no more LSD. I flew too close to the Sun on my last trip (in the Spring of '68), and almost didn't make it back. Hi Syd. Hi Peter. Hi Skip. Hi Brian.

I would buy it, here in the Pacific Northwest Seasonal Affective disorder (SAD) is a real thing, we should all have a light box, though looking at the Mac logo might depress those not in the fold, negating the effectiveness of the whole concept.

I am not a fan of McIntosh, but if Audio Research or Sonus Faber came out with one, I would not buy it. It is completely contrary to an audiophiles goal... the absolute best possible sound. I could put $1,700 into a better power cord or something to improve the sound. And... it’s like marketing to myself.
