Kanye West - Grammy comment, re Beck

Kanye West on-camera last nite: 'Beck needs to respect artistry.' Then a long rant about...ah just watch it.

What would Kanye say about Beethoven? Or Dylan? or Matisse?

Having fun with this as Twitter is aflame already with it. But the more I think about it, the more it gnaws on me. He was referring to Beck winning Album of the Year (instead of Beyonce). I could go on a long rant myself about his ego, general creepiness, but nothing I could add. But his comments are heard by millions of music fans...

Anyhoo, anyone else see those comments? Reactions?

This is rich:  now Kanye, saying he's 53 million dollars in debt, thinks Mark Zuckerberg should invest 1 billion in Kanye's work.  He also says that not only is he the greatest living artist but that he is the greatest artist ever.  Perhaps he has the greatest ego of any artist ever, but...this is unreal.
I thought I'd get past the new year without anyone mentioning a Kardashian.  (Auto fill capitalized the name, not me
hew, are you sure you're not playing the "age card" without really thinking about what the bunch of old farts are saying?  You can dislike something or somebody without being prejudiced.  Neither age nor race has anything to do with my disapproval of the way Kanye acts.  FWIW, I find some of his music interesting.  Not compelling, to where I go buy it or even listen to it online, but interesting.  But he needs to edit/filter his words and actions in public or suffer the ridicule they incur.  He's been acting like an arrogant fool in front of millions of people.  And he's not that young anymore, is he?
Let me clarify.
The consensus is, Kanye is a narcissistic, talentless, tactless, low-life idiot?
That sounds about right
Jeepers,  tostadosunidos,  you think moi subscribed to that rag???

I still subscribe to The New Yorker and The Atlantic,  my audio specific reading reading usually occurs when I'm flying,  bought at the terminal magazine shops.  I actually really don't know a mosfet from a misfit,  but I know what I like?

Happy New Year,  folks!
I pretty much don’t care what Kanye West does, thinks or says.
But the media sure wants us to know these things.
PS: Goes for his wife as well.
oblgny, ha-ha, never bought an issue in my life, I wouldn't know.  But I read stuff on the internet.  If anyone has interest in sports and/or music (and I like both) it's hard to escape the Kardashians.  But I've never seen their show.  Not sure why they have one.
Sorry tostadosunidos, my subscription to People magazine lapsed a few years ago!

Ummmm...is that still published?
There's a reason you did not know he's married to Beyonce--it's because he's not.  Jay Z is.  I think Kanye is married to a Kardashian.
All one needs do is watch the South Park "Fish Sticks" episode broadcast earlier in 2015 to vicariously enjoy watching Kanye lampooned in a manner that in different times would be considered crude, immature, vulgar, not to neglect mentioning downright funny.  More surprising than the episode itself was the lack of any response from his camp - perhaps because his self-proclaimed "genius" cannot fathom the intelligence required to respond in a like manner.

This, aside from being a delayed contribution to the forum, in and of itself does not cast aspersions on the awards part of the music business since that would be akin to looking at a vacuum cleaner and stating that it sucks.

I, for one, did not know that he was married to Beyoncé. Knowing it now I have to offer that I do not care, either.

Together and/or apart they're Vegas grade entertainers self designed to keep their stardom shining brightly with little or no regard, nor need, to produce the sort of music the majority of A'goners would appreciate. They are stars, want to be stars, and if recording a sea shanty would sell more of their records you would have heard Beyonce's "roarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" already.

People who publicly proclaim their genius do so because it's difficult as hell to simply wear it somehow and allow others to bask in the glow of the brilliance.  Scratch a stranger on the street and you may well discover  a genius amongst the crowd, walk along with a crowd of people shouting out loud their genius and you're apt to walk a different route.
Apples and oranges I am afraid here and a poor comparison if I say so Mr. Onhwy61
Will we even be mentioning his name in years to come
That statement would have applied to Ronald Reagan in 1948. One never knows, does one?
Right to the point - he is not a musician. Will we even be mentioning his name in years to come, I hope to hell we are not and especailly along side of the likes that you have mentioned. I understand and realize at my age different generations contibutions to music are always up for discussion ....the golden age of swing and ajzz...the big band era, the sixtiesand the seventies.....disco and metal hair bands in the eighties ...and so on. But this guy......no way !
What he is doing "right" is pissing off the establishment. Many musicians have done this over the years. Win the hearts of the young by pissing off the elders. You could look at Elvis Pressly, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, etc. They all were highly volitile acts, folks either loved them or hated them.
Not that I think that Kayne West belongs in that group, but that is kind of what he is doing.
Onhwy61
I do not think that is why he sell bazillions of his music. That happens because they like his music, not because people are pissed off at it. Please tell 'us'(the signifier)what he is doing right,('something' right?). So if he is trying to . . .?? What does he want pissed off people to do?? After this may your soul be warm and I guess pissed off. That's good right??
"You people" is an us vs. them signifier used to form distinctions within groups.

One of the hallmarks of rock music is that it offends certain people. Based upon this thread I believe Mr. West to be a true rocker.
Hello OnHwy61 - good point but let me know what you mean by ; '' some of you people '' ...that would be helpful. Enjoy the music just .....
I wonder what resurrected this thread. Too much down time. Scrolling through the threads. Drink in hand......
It warms my soul that West pisses off some of you people so much. He must be doing something right.
I was just enjoying some music from Crosby Stills & Nash that is almost 40 years old......will anybody be listening to this POS's music in 5 years ???? God I hope not .....he is a typical
Every time I see Kanye West, with his punked-out, bad-azzed permanent scowl, all I can think of is ... "Now there's a guy who needs a real down home Southern ass-whompin' ..."

We can throw Justin Beber into the mix as well.
Scott. Take a deep breath. Ahhhhh. Feels pretty good, yes? Take another one. Feels even better I'd wager.

If I may take the liberty, please allow me to quote this:

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

Reinhold Niebuhr
If one were to take the major labels out of the equation and allow more creative content without regards to sales, imagine just how long some of this mass market music would last.

One really can't blame the artist if he's the one being marketed: he's wholly a creation of the machine.

Having said that, I'm with Ps.

All the best,
Nonoise

It's spring in the Pacific Northwest. More light, sweeter air. Ornamental plum trees bursting forth with their delicate pink blossoms. The soil is wet and malleable, which makes weeding almost fun.

When I tire of yard work, I shower, knock down a craft beer or two, and listen to my all-tube system through my lovely, recently-acquired Sonus Faber Liuto Monitors, an exceptional pair of over-achievers.

I never listen to Mr. West. Why bother?

I don't like Kanye either, he is too immature for my tastes.

However, to demand that the thread be taken down, that a subject on the Grammys has no place on an Audio forum, displays a great deal of immaturity too.

You have to stop crying like a 2 year old when you don't get your way Ebm.
Ebm, you're entitled to your opinion, I'm not a huge fan of Kanye either but he comes up with some interesting material occasionally.
Its not a temper issue this should not be on Audiogon i could be wrong don't really care about West and his big ass wife.Sorry if I'm a little hostile please forgive me.
Ebm tends to have temper tantrums, I've seen this display on other threads too.

Foster_9, I don't think it is Kayne's attitude that he does not care about others approval, so much as he loves to have the spotlight on himself.
West and people like him are conditioned not to care about approval from other people. I'm sure his attitude is "anyone who doesn't like what I do or say can kiss my a.."
Kanye was on SNL 40th anniversary show last night and he took some pretty hard ribbing very well. I give him credit for that.

Did anyone else see the valentines cake that reads, "I love you as much as Kanye West loves Kanye West"?
Maybe the next time Kanye wins an award someone will dump a bucket of something appropriate--such as bullshit--on him. The guy needs to grow up. I do give him credit for stopping himself from going further than he did on the actual broadcast this time. Maybe that's a sign of hope.
kanye is an idiot for taking away what should have been a very proud moment for Beck,,and it was Becks moment and shithead kanye should not have been part of it.Someone said that kanye has some grammys,,I wonder how he would have felt had someone done the same to him.
HE can do whatever he wants. Just don't expect people to approve. I doubt he really cares though. I don't really either that much. Its just a discussion. Anyone can say or do whatever they want within teh limits of the law. Its a free country.
He's entitled to his own opinion and he can shout it from the rooftops after the show or tweet it or facebook it or however he wants to disseminate it, but not verbally during the awards ceremony. Rude is rude.
