What's your favorite lyric from a song?

Just curious what stays with people...
arthursmuck
An elegant song won't hold up long
When the palace falls and the parlour's gone
We all must leave but it's not the end
We'll meet again at the festival of friends.

Smiles and laughter and pleasant times
There's love in the world but it's hard to find
I'm so glad I found you - I'd just like to extend
An invitation to the festival of friends.

Some of us live and some of us die
Someday God's going to tell us why
Open your heart and grow with what life sends
That's your ticket to the festival of friends.

Like an imitation of a good thing past
These days of darkness surely will not last
Jesus was here and he's coming again
To lead us to his festival of friends.

Black snake highway - sheet metal ballet
It's just so much snow on a summer day
Whatever happens, it's not the end
We'll meet again at the festival of friends.
- Bruce Cockburn, Festival of Friends

And in the end, the love you take
Is equal to the love you make
- the Beatles
Love is a pain
Love is a heart attack
It's so easy to take
But so hard to give  back

        John Entwistle
" I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress. "
She's Sister Mary now, eyes as cold as ice. He takes her once a week on the Alter like a sacrifice.
Some balls are held for charity
And some for fancy dress
But when they're held for pleasure
They're  the balls that I like best😎

Everything is fine, got nothing to fear
Strap 'em down, we're outta gas
Stop your bawling, you little brat

Didn't wash up, yesterday I took a shower
Get this over with, I tee off in an hour
My Cadillac's running

Let's..
Rip, rip, we're gonna rip 'em out now
Rip, rip, we're gonna rip 'em out now
Rip, rip, we're gonna rip 'em out now

Perhaps the most disturbing lyrics that I've heard lately would be

"Dark the sky weapons fly / Lay them waste for your race."

That's the entire poem in a 6 minute song.

"Like a desert needs rain, like s town needs a name, I need your love."
"Like black coffee, like nicotine, I need your love"
- Hawkmoon 269, U2.

"No eternal reward will forgive us now for wasting the dawn"

-Jim Morrison

"The wheel is turning and you can't slow down,
You can't let go and you can't hold on,
You can't go back and you can't stand still,
If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will."

kavakat1,

I hate to rain on your parade, but I believe those lyrics are from the song "Sam Stone" written by John Prine.
I could never change
Just what I feel
My face will never show
What is not real
Clean this mess up or we'll all end up in jail. The test tubes and the scale get it all out of here. Is there gas in the car? Yes, there's gas in the car. I think the people down the hall know who you are....

Steeley Dan " Kid Charlemagne"
"Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
I thought it was there for good so I never tried"

Haunting lyric from Famous Blue Raincoat by Leonard Cohen.
"...and you know that you're over the hill
when your mind makes a promise that your body can't fill...".  Little Feat - "Old Folks Boogie"

"...if you were a pill I'd take a handful at my will and knock you back with something sweet and strong...". The Replacements -  "Valentine"

..."they got rats on the west side, bed bugs uptown...". The Rolling Stones - "Shattered"

...she was sharp as a razor, soft as a prayer..."
Tom Waits - "Bad Liver And A Broken Heart"

Just a few of the gems revisited during the weekend.

Next weekend?  Alice's Restaurant and The Last Waltz on infinite rotation for a day.
Following day is Christmas tree hunting with a healthy dose of Vince Guaraldi's now timeless soundtrack in the background.

Enjoy Thanksgiving, folks!

In one of the sexiest songs I’ve ever heard (it makes Prince sound like a Jr. High School boy), Lucinda Williams in her song "Essence" sings:

"Baby, sweet baby.........you’re my drug

come on and let me..........taste your stuff"

"Baby, sweet baby..........bring me your gift

what surprise you gonna.........help me with?"

"Baby, sweet baby.........whisper my name

shoot your love..........into my vein"

"Baby, sweet baby..........kiss me hard

make me wonder..........who’s in charge"

"Baby, sweet baby..........I wanna feel your breath

even though you like to..........flirt with death"

"Baby, sweet baby..........can’t get enough

please come find me (or does she say confine me?)..........and help me get f*cked up"

Those are the verses; there are also the choruses. Yes, in the literal sense it's about shooting up, but that's also a metaphor. Drummer Jim Keltner and the rest of her band create an absolutely killer groove to match the lyrics. This song is a masterpiece!

Excuse me, I hafta go wake up my girlfriend ;-).

Why the hell did Neil Young shoot his baby down by the river? Makes no sense. But with twi little changes.....
"She could drag me-e over the rainbow
Sent me awa-ay, though..."
(send to sent, add though)
It all makes sense. Rhymes better, too.

That's bothered me for decades!
My last post to this thread was 14 years ago. Figured it was time to add another. Was listening to The Rainmakers - "The Good News and the Bad News" album tonight and I really enjoy the song "We Walk the Levee". Not many songs out there about long going family feuds. I like this one and here's the hook......

The mud and the guilt and the gun get heavy,
We do what we gotta. We walk the levee.
If you are the tabloid
Caught up in this typhoid of cuckoo
Still hoarding the butter
In the mountains of muttering
Voodoo
Spreading this gospile
According to hostile
Well fuck you... fuck you
You deserted the spirit forever... sheep
Fuck you... for good
Why don't you fuck off
With your certified culture
Whimping away to some
Pasturised future
Killing the airwaves
Gannets for guano
Shit for propaganda
Radio dumbo
Audiogon censored (removed) my post because the lyrics contained 4 letter expletives. So %$#& that!

Oh God, can you feel the sun in your back
Oh God, can you see your shadow, inky black on the sand
Oh God, can you hear the saltwater drying on your skin
Oh God, can you feel my heart beating in my tongue

Oh God, by being quiet, I hope to alleviate my debt
Oh God, by sitting still, I hope to lighten your load

And when your shadow covers me from head to toe
And curtonevrae flies tell me it’s my time to go
Seven waves of insects make babies in my skin
Seven waves of insects make families in my skin
It’s just like animals at play
And the flesh rotted off my skull
And then I will have earned my permanent smile

Oh God, I never, never ask why
Oh God, I never, never ask why
