I'd try to connect with a local-ish vintage audio shop and just make a package deal with them, if you can. Are there any such businesses any where within a few hours of where you live?
I'm Retiring to a Trailer, and I have a LOT of vintage equipment. What to do?
Hi All!
As the title says, I'm downsizing and selling my collection. I live in Sonoma County, Northern California.
It seems daunting to individually market, pack and ship each item, so is it possible to sell it all at once, even if it's a substantial "loss"...
I would truly appreciate any sage advise.
Here is a list and a link to photos.

The sentiment I get here (and on a couple other fora) is that TMR is preferred over Sky-Fi, but both buy equipment and resell. The issue is whether they want to cherry pick. My impression is that the younger generation likes the old Marantz (Superscope era) receivers--to me, not "real" Marantz but I remember the gear from back in the day. You have at least those two options- but you'd want them to take everything-, right? Any quality 1/2 track 1/4" 15 ips reel to reel decks? Those can fetch some money if properly restored. Otherwise, a big black hole. Good luck, hope you can get out from under painlessly. |
Hey, @tomic601 nice to see ya!

I would love to buy a Marantz case. Here is my suggestion. Find/ask a young audiophile to handle it one by one, for let’s say a 25% fee. Otherwise you would sure lose 70 cents on the dollar. Another suggestion: get in touch with the guys at https://alleliteaudio.com/ they might have a better idea |
@whart ya man - good to see you here also. Our love of a certain vintage intersection…. |
You're going to have to rent a storage unit. The big stuff, like those 10" r-r deck, Klipsh speakers, etc. are difficult to ship. Use the Craigslist or Nextdoor websites to list them locally. There's always eBay but they charge a lot when you sell, and with all the competition, you won't get near top dollar. Of course there's, Audiogon. Also Reverb for studio applicable gear like the JBL L112 and L100 and the RpR decks. Or - see if you can do a consignment deal with a stereo shop: Here;s a list you can start with: |
@misc-audio in my part of the country (Ohio) we have online auction services like auctionohio.com and they often have a lot of vintage equipment for sale. I am sure that in your part of the country they would have similar services. When these auctions go up they are sometimes for up to 30 days, and then the company handles the payments (the sale prices all get adjusted as well so that the buyers pay the auction fees), coordinates the buyers coming and picking up, etc. Then it is cleared out pretty quickly. Of course some stuff remains unsold I suppose and then other decisions would have to be made. Something to consider. |

Sadly, vintage gear is now on the decline, 2 years ago this was a gold mine, now not so much. Sadly most of your gear does not appear to be well kept. They all look like they need a little love. Plus now shipping is getting stupid expensive, so most things will be sold locally. What do you want from it? A quick sale? Most $$ you can? Little involvement/ very involved? Personally you have a few Marantz pieces that are nice, but not sure I want to ship them. |
@ericleehall Contact support@audiogon.com and we can help you sell your gear. |
I placed an ad locally a while back on many pieces of gear, and I was contacted by a reseller, who came and took much away. I shortly after saw some of his ads listing my stuff, for way more than he paid me. I knew this would be, and it was fine. I was glad to make the room. In fact, I am making another list locally, as it is time once again to lighten the load. |
I don’t know if anyone else wrote this, but the collection is certainly worth a reseller sending or coming with a truck. So your scope is pretty good on this in terms of finding neighboring state dealers. The hard part is finding that dealer, but that really is just a little internet searching starting in your state, then Branch out to the big names in vintage audio two states away...and so on. I think it's completely possible that you could solve this problem in a couple of days with a few well placed phone calls. Somebody will bring that truck. Christ, if I were anywhere near you I’d love to cherry pick a few things. Like my wife would want me to walk through the door with one more thing.. Resist idiots like me taking all the good stuff and find that dealer. Two days on the phone will get you that. It’s worth it. |
Congratulations on selling your gear. I’m 73 and have been selling off my collection in pieces where I’m down to 2 systems. What I found interesting was your love of things JBL. In 1990’s and first decade of 2000, I had a side hustle with a friend going to garage sales in Sarasota, FL area and then reselling on EBay. If I found something I loved, I kept and enjoyed until something else caught my fancy. Since Sarasota is fairly affluent and everyone and their brother was moving there during that time period I went through about 35 pairs of speakers, the bulk being vintage JBLs. One pair I owned that I did not notice in your list and really wish I had kept, were a pair of JBL Aquarius IV S109s. One upward firing woofer and a tweeter that fired into a diffraction plate in the rear. I called them my "Bose Killers". I spent 3 weeks refinishing with the help of a custom furniture building friend and a fellow who did my refoaming. They were amazing. |
Where I live, we had some really good technicians that bought up vintage equipment and did restorations. Even things like Edison cylinder machines, art deco radio consoles, early idler drive turntables, essentially anything that presented itself as a good project. If equipment wasn’t working, they also purchased that so they could salvage the parts. I’m just mentioning this in case you have some things that didn’t sell as easily as the prime stuff.
