Anyone know a custom woodworker who can make a case for a vintage receiver?

It's impossible to find an original one so I'd love to find someone who can make me a case for my Scott 222C.

@oberoniaomnia:

I took your suggestion and looked on Etsy for custom wood cabinets for my Pioneer TX-9500II tuner and found just what I was looking for, a cabinet maker who would construct a custom cabinet in real American walnut. It was expensive, more than the tuner cost!  When it arrives, I’ll finally post my system and you’ll see why I sprung for it. Thanks for the heads up 🙏!

Do not get a case like that shipped. It is the easiest thing to crush. This is basic cabinetmaking. A first month apprentice would be able to master this. Go to a local cabinetmaker. Drive there with the unit you want covered. They will measure it and make one on the spot. Tell them you will finish it at home(ie stain/ varnish/laquer),

Do not go to a franchise wookdworking firm. Find a local independent. It’ll save you shipping plus the hassle when it gets destroyed as it inevitably would. Saves the franchise added cost. More than likely a better quality end result. Ask for mitered corners and take along a phone or laptop with photos of cases you like the look of.

perhaps consider constructing by your own kind self . perhaps also via Ancient Japanese Woodworking Technology which utilizes no glue nails etc. only hand tools ..perhaps also consider a fanciful / artistic / imaginative design as a proud work of art . many such highly skilled can be found on YouTube for examples of what can be achieved .

HiFi Caseworks does exactly that, I've talked to them in the past about a case for my Tubes4hifi amplifier; their quote was very fair in my mind. I have a friend who had one made for a vintage Onkyo that looks beautiful

Found a great guy on Etsy. Custom and way less than some of the original ones I found on ebay. Thanks everyone!

+1 for the guy who recommended Rachel Geshelli's (Geshelli Lab's) "grandpa" who does all their wooden cases and custom ones. She did a video of him creating some and wow, good work.

Here is one guy specializing in custom wooden cases

Others offer cases for specific components that are less. They might be able to accommodate custom orders.

Also, Bob Gasperetti, a long time professional cabinetmaker, and friend, here in Vermont, does beautiful work.

I have purchased a 15 drawer chest from him (highly figured Walnut case, Curly Applewood drawer fronts) and several Jewelry boxes.

He is now semi-retired but still does a lot of smaller projects.

here’s that wood case, does it fit your unit?

a lot of options pop up on eBay ’scott wood case’ search

Maybe, they never offered wood for that specific model, which is why you won’t find a model specific wood one.

Pay attention to the bottoms, they had holes for ventilation, and feet to allow air flow under/thru/out the top vents and back details vary also, depending on a unit's jack locations, which is why I made mine completely unobstructed.

Ya, I'm blind from reading your, incoherent, meandering, posts. Well, that and you know, I'm just doing it until I need glasses.

Woodworking is a hobby of mine, most of the wooden furniture in my house was handmade in my workshop.

I work in US native hardwoods, Cherry, Maple or my favorite Black Walnut.

Can you DM a sketch of thoughts?  I can send you photos of stuff I have made.

You might check with Hardwood Artisans of northern Virginia.  They custom make furniture and might be willing to do it.  It would not hurt to ask.  We have hard furniture made by them since 1979, and they do quality work.  Here is a link to their website:  https://hardwoodartisans.com

Try vintagehifinut, Matt in Bend, OR has made some very nice vintage equipment enclosures. He took on a couple of my custom wood projects, a custom plinth/armboard for my AR, and custom stands for my Omega SAM’s. Not sure where he is at with projects right now, but worth considering.

That's pretty basic woodworking.

I bet the local high school woodshop would make you one.

contact Geshelli Labs, they have a guy that makes custom enclosures using a song you select. They were doing this for their flagship dac, so they might be able to do this with anything.

I'd go along with what gkelly said, find someone local. My area has a woodworking club and you can go to them with your project and they'll have a good idea which members would be best suited for it. You now have someone you can talk to in person to accurately describe what you're looking for and they can get hands on the receiver to take all the measurements they need. You'll also most likely come out ahead cost-wise. Maybe your area has something similar. If not, there are LOTS of woodworker hobbyists all over the country just itching for a project, surely there's someone local to you.

not a case, but I built a ventilated surround/stand for vintage tube equipment

New Jersey Hardwoods, Plainfield, NJ made and finished the pieces for me from my drawings and finish samples, I assembled them with parts from Amazon

full description, many photos here

https://www.audiogon.com/systems/9703

Can stack up to 100 lbs on top, the back is fully open for access, and the lower unit can slide out without moving the item on top

I’m about to sell my Fisher 500C Receiver, no case, I think I’ll include a surround/stand with it.

Check out Timbernation. I just ordered a pair of walnut shelves; reasonable prices, infinite options.

Look on Etsy:

Several wood enclosures available. Contact maker and ask for custom job.
Or, contact your local cabinet maker. This is easy woodworking. Depends a bit whether you just want a face plate, or a whole enclosure and whether it requires ventilation slits/grille. I would make my own, but sorry, not offering to make yours. Already have too many projects.

Maybe contact Lou Hinckley at Daedalus Audio , aside from building speakers he has done work for Modwright maybe he can accommodate your particular need
