Computer audio vs outboard DAC for Windows 11
As you send your audio signal to the Rotel A12 via optical cable (as opposed to computer headphone jack to RCA-in on integrated), you already use an outboard DAC. The sound card of your PC is completely bypassed. Accordingly, an upgraded sound car...
Why I don't think I'll ever return to vinyl - brief rant
@n80 Exactly my take as well. 15K streams sounds about right, depends a bit on platform with Spotify paying at the low end and Tidal/QB being "better" but still woefully low.  Souldisco on YouTube recently did a video on it, worth checking out if...
Why I don't think I'll ever return to vinyl - brief rant
I applaud OP for supporting artists by buying direct; I do the same. Vinyl occasionally can have problems, yet by and large things have been fine with my new purchases. Split seams and tear in inner sleeves are much more common than vinyl defects....
What are your Perfect or near perfect albums in your collection?
Razzia - Tag Ohne Schatten. "The best punk album that made its way past the federal prosecutor's office". German HC punk, well-recorded, strong from start to finish. The Ex - Blueprints for a Blackout. Experimental "jazzy" post-punk double LP, in...
Unfortunately, this article is accurate
What is an audiophile? Someone who cares about sound. Nothing about $-amount, medium, or social aspect.  I know one person under 35 who cares about soundstage with nice little set-up (active speakers and TT). Nobody in my age bracket >50 cares...
Surprised at how turntable sounds
I just got a Fluance RT87 and am quite pleasantly surprised. Still under $1K. Just for a little desktop system, but not bad at all. Not quite as good a my other TT (Rega Naia rig), but that has also a different price tag.
What happens when you stop letting streaming apps pick your music?
@toro3 You are correct that I don't do any streaming anymore. In the early 2000 I used pandora for a while, but once learning how badly artists get exploited, I dropped that as well. I do listen to digital music using Roon/Audirvana server. I buy...
Do you have a favorite record label?
4AD: classic wave label SST: great for indie rock and some punk Homestead records: another cult 80s indie post-punk label. Eins.Zwei.Acht out of Switzerland: electronica and weird -wave, plus the Friendship editions are to die for. I have 4 or ...
Are you having problems with Upscale Audio?
I have dealt with them repeatedly, and lately I consider them engaging in deceptive business practices. I purchased a VPI SPS table with ADS from them, then wanted to trade it in for a Rega Naia. Lots of advertisement for trade-ins on their websit...
The Loneliest Hobby, PART 2
I am an 80% music lover, 20% gear head. I write instagram posts on the weird music I like, focusing on obscure gems in darkwave and associated genres (cold, new, witch, NDW, EBM, IDM, synth pop, electronica, neofolk, plain weirdness, contemporary ...
Ripping CDs,…
@freediver +1 ... and there is the issue which version you get from downloads. "Remastered" does not equate with "better".
What happens when you stop letting streaming apps pick your music?
So rather than one app picking one's music, you suggest to use a different app? LOL! There is this thing between my ears, commonly called a "brain", that is perfectly suited to select and discover music. It gets input from friends, articles, indep...
Changing audio beliefs
Liquid washing vinyl was considered a harebrained foolery back in school in the 80s. Then I thought ultrasonic was utter overkill. I have now US processed my entire vinyl collection, and I think I can hear the difference.
Can I suspend / hang speakers?
There is also this thing called "inertia". Given the time domain of directional push being at worst around 1/25 s (for low 25 Hz bass), which is then reversed again, the amount of force on the large mass is tiny.  I have seen chain suspended spea...
Do you have any gear that was outright given to you?
When we bought our house, the previous owners left a complete midlevel stereo including two TVs. They did not ask for any money, did not expect it. Gave the TVs away, of course [we are a rare no-TV household], and most of the other stuff as well o...
