Can I suspend / hang speakers?

All right, I'm setting up a home theatre for dad (father's day and all), and he'd prefer to suspend the rears from the rafters rather than have stands. It seems...well...you know. Can someone give me a sound technical reason this is a bad idea? Thanks. -Dave

I had my first pair of "Hi-Fi" speakers for 27 years (1989 to 2016), and for the first 16 years of it they were hanging from the ceiling because I didn't want our kids to push in the Vifa tweeters or poke holes in the woofer cones (Hafler 200's.) My niece still uses them daily today, though it was in 2012 that I replaced the Vifa tweeters with new identical ones.

There is also this thing called "inertia". Given the time domain of directional push being at worst around 1/25 s (for low 25 Hz bass), which is then reversed again, the amount of force on the large mass is tiny.

I have seen chain suspended speakers at clubs, and they did not move despite loud volume. Was it the best sound? Hell no. But it is feasible.
