Yes, you have described gapless playback correctly. There is an entry on Wikipedia that goes into more detail.
It’s hardly the cheapest way to get the Auralic working, but Roon controls play of Auralic devices quite well. It is multiplatform and quite versatile, but the total cost of ownership is significant. It will need a license and a Roon server running on your home network.
I used to use BubbleUPnP with my Auralic device. It’s a DLNA/OpenHome control point that runs on Android, and I don’t know if they have a version for iPhone. It’s more finicky than using something like Roon.
I think Linn also uses OpenHome, so their control app might work. In general, search for an OpenHome control point to see what’s available for iPhone (or whatever device you are using to control playback).
As others have said, the Auralic Web interface will let you configure the Altair, when and if that becomes necessary.
