I recently made up cables from Mogami W3103, and they sound very good to my ears. Connected between a Coda CSiB and Graham LS6F speakers, I do not find them dark at all. Bulk it’s under $5/ft. When I made them, I did some research into having different cable lengths, and the consensus I found was that in most cases, having different length cables makes no difference, as long as the two cables are not wildly different. Mine are about 8’ and 12’ and I hear no difference.
Advice on speaker cables.
Hello. First time post here and I understand there’s no definitive answer, just looking for advice. I have a midrange system to me anyway and most of it was purchased new recently after giving up on repair of vintage gear. I’ve been using the same 12 gauge Apature copper speaker wire since 1982 and figured I would upgrade. I didn’t realize the hole I was going down. I’ve tried Blue Jean 10 white sounded dull, as well as WBC 7 gauge which I somewhat liked except bass seemed boomy at the expense of treble and midrange. Cables I’ve been advised to try are Kimber 4pr or 8pr as well as Audio Analysis oval 12. I’ve only used bare wire in the past not sure if that matters. My system is Yamaha as1200, Cxn100 streamer, Rotel 1572 mkii cd, Nakamichi oms1a cd. Speakers are Polk monitor 10a I bought new in 1982 with recently upgraded clarity cap crossovers. All interconnects are WBC. Appreciate any advice on speaker cables. Thank you.

Maybe you can wait until you "get your new speakers", test with what you have now to get a general idea first. Then figure out where you plan to position them - where they sound their best within the room, then decide on speaker cables, lengths, and such. @kmm84 I received your message, unable to msg back. I’m not sure what you have there now, and the later version cables were by Accusound. If it was before then, hard to say what they are now based on your descriptions. Never seen or heard of those particular product issues before. Best of luck. |
Speaker cables are very user/system dependent and are useful in refining the sound you are seeking.
The Mogami cables, mentioned above, are usually neutral and represent good value.
If you are handy with a soldering iron, or use spade lugs with locking screws, a good benchmark is to fabricate some speaker cables using microwave cable (NOTE: not all microwave cable is the same gauge and construction type). Avoid microwave cable with aluminum/steel center conductors plated with copper. Use microwave cable with solid copper (solid or stranded conductors) or Silver Plated Copper (SPC) wire. I prefer the solid center conductor SPC construction though it can sound a bit bright. Microwave cables typically excel in long runs (good if you want to run the cables under a floor to the speakers) due to the low capacitance and low inductance construction. Once you are used to the microwave cable sound you could bring in other cables for comparison. You could do the same with the Mogami cable.
