If you listen to much Symphony, or Rock music consider keeping the subs.  Rock music in particular, has a prodiguous amount of bass and beats-per-minute.  Reproducing low/mid bass with the smaller woofer/midrange units may interfere with midrange ...

Speaker cables are very user/system dependent and are useful in refining the sound you are seeking.   The Mogami cables, mentioned above, are usually neutral and represent good value.   If you are handy with a soldering iron, or use spade lugs...
