I'm late to this discussion, but I think you need to really pay attention to the reality that in that shared space, you are going to have to keep your speakers pretty much against the wall. So I recommend the Larsen series of speakers (and apologies if someone already has. - I tried to read through this long chain). Their speakers are designed to work right up against a wall - they don't work well if you don't place them there. Reviews have always been very positive, and they come in many sizes and prices.
When I was a young boarding school teacher (early/mid 80's), the small apartment that came with the gig didn't have much room to accommodate speakers into the room. I used Linn speakers that were designed to be place hard against the wall, and they worked perfectly with my Naim amps and Linn turntable. It's a matter of "Horses for courses," and I bet Larsen could be a good match for you.
