Thorens clutch system
Yes - @zavato the Woodsong bearing is what I used, too. It runs beautifully since I installed it. Only this little clutch thing makes it less than perfect.    David
Thorens clutch system
Recently, I had the bearing in my TD-124 changed over. It lifted the platter just a smidge, but it was enough to render the clutch inoperable. It is not hard to readjust it (three nylon screws under the platter), but I haven't gotten to it yet. In...
Question for the older folks- did you ditch vinyl when cd arrived?
I doubled down on vinyl - though I did buy CDs when a favorite artist didn't come out in vinyl. So, for awhile (late 80's into the 2000's), we were in a vinyl desert, and to hear beloved artists new work, I had to get the CD.  I do have over a tho...
Are you a keeper or a flipper?
Like oddiofyl, I have to use the value of what I currently own to own something new. I tend to keep many things a long time - I had my Linn LP12 for over 30 years before trying something new. I am now at the stage where I'm running out of time to ...
“Civilian” reaction to your gear?
The responses have been mixed. Some sort of shrug and say "That's nice." Others have said they've never heard music sound so good. The phantom center channel gets remarked on - I'm surprised at how many folks have never experienced that phenomenon...
Looking for good interconnects for narrowly spaced jacks
I had a pair of RCA's made for me by Pine Tree Audio. They were for my 1970's reel-to-reel tape deck. He did some measurements, and found a set of Switchcraft RCAs that would fit. he made up the interconnect, and it has been perfect. Fits my Scott...
Phono Pre-amp for non-vinyl guy.
A really good inexpensive model that works for both MM and MC is the Andover Spinstage. I bought one as a substitute while my regular phono reamp was getting upgraded. With certain cartridges, it sounded very good indeed. Under $300.   David
What does "Warm" mean?
I read McGowan's description of "Warmth" this morning, and thought it was pretty good way to describe what was happening to cause such sounds like this. Someone in the Absolute Sound world once described the world as being split along a seam. On o...
Really good, inexpensive moving magnet cartridges - Celebrating "good enough" components
All three of you point towards Audio Technica - excellent under $100 cartridges. In the 80's my first Linn came with a "Linn Basik" cartridge - I used that thing for a couple of years until I could afford something better. Which was the Linn K-18 ...
Vinyl Storage Options
I had a carpenter make "built-ins" They work great, but I kept getting records, so I have need to augment the rackage to accommodate my acquisitiveness. I bought two sets of four of these Mapleshade racks:   https://shop.mapleshadestore.com/Waln...
To Equalize or Not to Equalize
DSpeaker has a few options to control things in the digital realm. There is the Anti-Mode 2.0, and the more sophisticated (and expensive) X4. I've used both for years at a time, and found them both helpful They each have a "Tilt" control, not unli...
First foray into tube amps
You have so many advocates for, naturally enough, for brands that have satisfied those who own them. Adding another is probably not a good service at this point, but because the brand hasn't been mentioned, I will. For your budget, you could find ...
Volume considerations
I think finding the "best" volume for each recording really matters to my enjoyment. I find that the volume can control the apparent size of the middle of the soundstage, be it vocal or, say, saxophone. If I don't want a 15 ft. vocalist, I need to...
Is there any interesting music coming from France ?
There is a label out of Paris called "No Format." It is centered on performers from Europe and Africa - but a recent album had a South American featured. I truly love a number of the albums. Any that has Piers Faccini on it has been worthy. Good g...
Best bang for the buck
Well, I spent it on a person, rather than equipment. I bought a day and a half of Jim Smith coming to my Boston area house (from the Atlanta area where he resided). He is the author of "Roomplay" and "Get Better Sound," and he could be hired to co...
