Best Server To Run Roon Core

Hi Folks,

I don’t currently run ROON, but would like to begin correctly in order to give it a chance - and I understand that server (hardware) on which Roon core is installed is important for SQ (due to noise reduction and other factors).

What are the best hardware for SQ and usability where ROON core should be installed and why (be it audiophile dedicated servers or modified PCs)? Please comment on the rest of your setup for context if you could.

Thank you in advance.

“Or perhaps I will order a Grimm MU1!”

@fastfreight

You certainly can but another user of MU1 also found Muon Pro + Rubicon switch to be highly effective ahead of MU1 :-)

Hello @lalitk , 100% agree!  I would keep my Muon Pro and M12 in front of  MU1.

The Grimm would run Roon Core (Server)  and AES (Streamer) into my Tambaqui, and also serve to my second system's streamer via LAN.  Only downside is not being able to use AES from Grimm MU1 into BOTH of my DAC's!  If had only read amazing things about MU1's AES output into the Tambaqui.

I have an Antipodes K21 doing streamer/server duties.

Wondering if switching to a Nuc13 as server, leaving the K21 to solely be used as streamer would improve things.

@jerrybj not exactly apples to apples with your use case but…

I was using Mac Mini as a Roon Core for years. Not bad. Recently picked up Roon Nucleus One and actually prefer the Nucleus. I was shocked to hear the difference there and even more shocked to hear the improvements with better Ethernet cables on the Nucleus (for Mac Mini vs Nucleus comparison both units were fed by the exact same cables).
So I would say try the Nucleus and see how you like it. I think Roon charges 15% restocking fee if you return it. I’d look into it might be worth a shot to free up the capacity in the Antipodes. It could have a positive effect on streamer performance.

Thanks AP1

From what I understand, the Antipodes K21 sounds better if used solely as a streamer. Still, it sounds pretty damn good as it is!

I have an old Nuc I haven't got around to setting up. Probably the best option would be to fire that up first...
