Mild Electric Shock When Touching Shunyata Alpha NR Plugs
I got a mild electric shock from a Shunyata Alpha-X NR plug when I accidentally touched it with my fingers after it’s unplugged from the outlet. Is this normal or has anyone experienced the same? Do the NR plugs store electricity in them after the cable has been used for a considerable period?

They are short on the details on their site, but they claim to have multi-stage noise reduction. If that actually applies to the cables it's possible they have a series mode filter or small resonant circuit. If you are sure that the cable was disconnected on both ends, then it must have some power storage. |

@lak response from Shunyata as below.
This is a known and compliant behavior. When you pull a power cord out of a live outlet, the small capacitors in the cable can hold a residual charge momentarily on the prongs. If you touch them immediately upon pulling it out you can get a small tingle, it’s essentially equivalent to a static shock off a doorknob. In our testing and experience, this shock dissipates within a couple of seconds because the cable has a dissipation circuit built into it. This is fully compliant, not harmful and there is nothing to be alarmed about. But with this said, this customers experience, testing and the timeline they’ve noticed this tingle extends beyond anything we’ve experienced or would expect. The dissipation circuit should clear the charge in seconds, not minutes. Our best guess without seeing the unit is that there may be a capacitor that’s not discharging at the rate it should, either a component issue or something in the dissipation circuit on that specific cord. That said we want to be clear, these cables are completely safe to use. The amount of energy stored is inconsequential from a safety standpoint. The shock risk is essentially nonexistent in terms of causing any real harm. It’s more of an annoyance than a danger. |
