late to streaming, recommendations?

Vinyl and tubes guy here but I recently got my act together and figured out how to do loseless spotify into my system using a dedicated computer, usb to Cambridge Audio DacMagic100 and then rca into my tube preamp.  sampling rate is 192 (whatever that means).  was a definite improvement over what I was doing before and streaming finally sounds pretty good to me.  Now I'm starting to use it a lot and wondering, well, how could it be better?  What would be the logical and most worth it bang-for-the-buck upgrade path for me?

Well I'd spend a grand or two if I thought it was really worth it.  but someone needs to help me understand the basics here, how is a streamer different than using my computer to stream and going through a DAC?  Is it really a big jump in quality?  and do I need to switch to a better quality service?

A streamer is a purpose built device made specifically to create high fidelity music. A PC or Mac is an incredibly hostile environment to create a stream of music. Even a cheap Bluesound Streamer will outperform a PC or Mac. In general, choosing best of class streamers a $500 will perform less than a $1K and < $2K <$5K < $10K and <$20K assuming equal capable components thought your system.

My rule of thumb (once again, choosing best of class... not just buying by price) your investment in Amp = Preamp = DAC = Streamer = Phonostage = Turntable. I have a great analog end and digital end which I carefully chose and they sound virtually identical. In today’s world, in general you can match your digital end quality to analog end quality for roughly the same price. But like analog there are different house sounds... most obvious with the DAC... but the streamer will be most obvious in how dynamic the sound is and how quiet the noise floor is.

I have over twenty years of streaming experience and have streamed on every conceivable platform, PC, Mac, Bluesound, $3K, $5K, $10K $15K and $25K streamers. I own two Aurender Streamers, which I recommend. Not only are their fidelity extremely good for the money, but their app for control is first class... You use an app on an iPad or phone to control the steamer... to choose albums and search through the millions of albums and stations. You can see my systems under virtual systems under my userID.

Get a subscription for Qobuz it is the best sounding streaming service and is a standard on all streamers... Tidal is the second best. Only ~$14 per month, with over half a million high definition albums.

You want a compatible and equally capable DAC... think PhonoStage. Best to get a separate DAC from Streamer... then you can upgrade separately and not have the circuitry increase noise floor.

Essentially streamers are networking computers.  They are optimized for sound better than bog standard computers -the previous posts touches on several reasons why a computer, which is a jack of many trades, isn’t the best at sound reproduction.  Streamers also usually look like audio components.

There are programs designed to make PCs sound better.  Generally they shut down the rest of the computer that isn’t playing music, in order to decrease the electrical noise generated by these functions.  The programs also supply a graphical user interface, help organize your music which may reside on different hard drives or streaming services.
When I first started streaming I used a PC with the programs Audirvana.  Audirvana sounded notably better than the PC running without an optimizing program.
Eventually I tired of having a computer tethered to my system.  Being able to control everything with a mobile device was preferred.  And while Audirvana really helped sonically, a dedicated audio device, even in the lower priced streamer end, sounded better.

Since the OP likes the CA DAC Magic I think he probably would really like the current lineup of CA streamer-DACs, which now use the ESS Sabre Chips.  I own 2 CXN 60s which essentially use his current DAC.  I use external DACs for both but the native DACs are no slouches.  The CAs have been reliable and the app that controls them is quite good.

If he wants to go cheaper I would recommend one of the Wiim devices to use with the DAC Magic.  I had bad luck with Bluesound products reliability, and for the same price range as Bluesound I would go with CA

Well I’d spend a grand or two if I thought it was really worth it.

Maybe to put this in perspective, in streaming terms with your computer and DAC you’ve got the equivalent of a $200 turntable playing through a $400 phono preamp — would paying $2000 on upgrading both be “worth it?”  Much like with analog, the more effort and $ you put into your streaming setup the better your results will be, and from where you’re starting the potential improvements are huge.  Since you’ve clearly grasped the wonderful benefits streaming can bring I’d highly recommend upping your budget to like $5k for a new DAC and streamer and you’d be on another level entirely (think of how a $2k analog rig would compare to one that costs $5k).  Just my $0.02 FWIW, and best of luck in upping your streaming game.  You should also give Qobuz a try with a free trial as well especially after you upgrade because Spotify “lossless” while good is still compromised.
