@neonknight I am thinking I misunderstood how Ortofons policy on repair worked and that you are right with your figures, certainly would not want to give anyone inaccurate advice. I based a decision to purchase a slightly used Quintet Black 6 months ago based on what I thought it to be after talking to a dealer. This is probably a case of, It's not what you don't know that will get you it's what you know for sure that isn't. Enjoy the music
Ortofon MC X30 broken cantilever - what are my options
I purchased this cart about 3 months ago. After playing a record yesterday, I noticed the Cantilever was slightly askew towards the center of the record. I decided to brush it lightly with a dry stylus brush to see if something was loose. The cantilever fell off. I do not recall any event that could have damaged it but you never know.
I have sent a message to Ortofon - but what are my options? This is my first time with a broken MC Cart.

I sent Ortofon a message to get some guidance on how to return it for inspection and possible replacement. I definitely want to hear from them, it costs $70, since I do not remember doing anything to break it off. Maybe there was a flaw in the manufacturing process since this is a new cartridge design with new suspension materials. Depending on their response and proposed solution I will decide the next step. |
"I sent Ortofon a message to get some guidance on how to return it for inspection and possible replacement. I definitely want to hear from them, it costs $70, since I do not remember doing anything to break it off" Depending how diplomatic the response is, my guess is it will come to this- We will send you a new one for 25% less of MSRP( I suppose on top shipping both ways?) Your experience may very well be true, doubtful it will influence Ortofon policy. Most longtime LP disciple/audiophools experience cartridge trauma at least once-imagine how the $10k+ plus guys feel. I was about to purchase the X40, but found a used Lyra Delos for the right price. X30 looks like a good buy for someone new to higher performance entry MC. Good luck with your next cart. |
@maam522a I suggest that you also ask Ortofon to tell you the reason for the cantilever failure. If it was caused by a manufacturing issue, they should take particular note of the problem so that the appropriate countermeasures can be put into place. If it was caused by something that you did, you want to know what to avoid or be careful of so that there won't be a recurrence in the future. Best of luck with the replacement cartridge! |
