@vthokie83 I think you are mistaken about Coda making Sanders amps. They may have possibly done this many years ago but my understanding is they actually just did the circuit design work and even that was done may years ago. Not sure about today but I live 15 minutes from Coda and have been in their building a few times including their back rooms and have not seen any Sanders amps. I do however always see them building Coda amps.
Amp Recommendations
Hello everyone, posting this for a friend. He's looking for a new amp. The current setup is
Audiolab 6000CDT (Transport)
MSB Link upgraded (DAC)
Conrad Johnson PV-11
Pair of Berning EA-230 (used as monoblocks)
Martin Logan Electromotion
Interconnects are Pangea Audio Premier XL
Choseal Speaker cables (replaced Kimber Kable 4 TC)
The Berning amp just doesn't have enough power to run the ML. He's looking for (preferably) a tube amp that is at least 100 wpc. Also open to an integrated amp (also tubed). New or used is fine and budget is $3 - 5K. He started looking and is eyeing PrimaLuna DiaLogue Premium HP, Almaro A50125A, or VAC PA 100/100. Thoughts/suggestions.

To @jaybeckley - which Electromotion speaker version do you own, is it the ESL X series? Five years ago I spent about three hours in a Magnolia / BestBuy store and until after they closed late showing the guys there how to set them up with NO speaker switcher crap, a good source, cables direct to the speakers, and moved them out on the floor. Then getting them away from the hodge-podge dolby digital receivers and best we could do with separate 2-channel solid state amplification. I was helping a friend who was considering buying them similar to mine for a hybrid audio/home theater setup in 2nd room system. Anyhow, the speakers really did not come to life in 2ch audio until we got to some of the better amplfiiers that could deal with the 91d 6ohm speakers. We also heard them with one of the highest power McIntosh power amps and the speakers really started to show their capability with some real current behind them. For my other hybrid system, I've tried my own MLs with some big iron (largest transformers, highest power Cary and Quicksilver Monblock) tube amps. I run dual 12" Scanspeaker stereo subs btw, and I'm not talking about deep bass. While they did okay, I still think a quality heavyweight SS amplifier with some quality big iron in it can bring out sound you may not have experienced before with these speakers - if you've not already tried it. Has to do with how they can project sound out into the room, and I'm an electrostatic speaker fan btw. I build custom air motion AMT speakers for my own use btw. If you are not looking to try other amps, this could be why others mention trying other speakers with your existing amps perhaps. Best of Luck.

Seems 150wpc+ would be adequate. Amps often sound best loafing along with ample headroom. Berning- great amp designer. Seems might be better sonically to replace speakers than the amp. |
