An Audiophile Nightmare

I woke up this morning and knew I had to share with my fellow AGoners a bit of humor only we would truly understand. Last night asleep, I was suddenly awakened by what was perhaps the single worst nightmare I've ever experienced--one of my speakers had been moved without my permission. That's right, the left speaker was off by at least 2 inches after having spent God knows how many days of precise measuring, re-measuring, and listening. Waking up this morning, I still sensed an unusual disturbance in the force until I walked into my den and suddenly realized that, yes, it was all just a horrible nightmare and that my precious center image was still intact. The relief was incredible, and my morning coffee and Wordle were like heaven!

I am not subject to such worries.  Each of my speakers weighs over 400 lbs. each.

Funny, but what a relief for you in the end OP.

When I said I wanted to replace my amplifier this week, my wife had the audacity to recommend, with utmost sincerity, that I ditch my entire kit and replace it with a Bose Revolution.  Seriously, she did that, without a hint of irony or sarcasm.  Horrifying.

In marked contrast to some of the comments about spousal reactions here, when I went in search of new speakers several years ago to replace my early 1990s Infinity Modulus satellites (produced before Infinity went mass market) and Definitive Technology subwoofer, I had speakers in the $4K to $6K range.  While at the dealer's showroom, however, I was totally struck by sound reproduction of the Fyne F-702 speakers, which at the time were about 50% higher than the top of my price range.  After listening to several speakers and arriving back home, I told the wife of my brief but wonderful experience with the Fynes.  (Background here: we are very much "senior citizens," I am totally retired, we have gotten our two children through private colleges with no debt incurred by them--with scholarship assistance, and, aside from the equipment cost of our love of listening to good music, we live quite modestly.)  Well, after only about 10 minutes of my extolling the speakers, she said, "If you like them so much, maybe you should just go ahead and buy them."  That began a four-year upgrade cycle of our 1980s/1990s audio system, with most of the older equipment being retired to my home office.  My wife has been very supportive of this upgrade process and, after 53 years of marriage, we have both decided that our spouses are "keepers!"

’And then we have those days when it’s like, "Nobody touch me"

I Touch No One and No One Touches Me-
