Just buy speakers with the metal grills.That was one of the reasons I went with the SVS subs.

Chicken wire won’t stop a finger poking 3 year old. Use Hardware Cloth instead.

Exactly, not even 1 year old like my son done on my ML twenty-five years ago.

My friend did this with his old ESS Heil Air Motion Transformer AMT-1A speakers in the late 1970s (which we thought were "high end"). He made some nice wooden frames to hold the chicken wire and back in those days he had to spray paint it black. He stained the frames the same as the speakers. Looked nice and didn't seem to affect the sound at all. He had two kittens and had never had cats before so it was all a learning experience. Worked fine. Grilles were never scratched.

Remember Grandma’s clear plastic couch cover? In the late 60s we had a cat. I bought a pair JBL Dorian S12s. The cat liked the grill. So I took measurements and went to a couch cover maker. Had him make 2 clear plastic covers. Basically like a flat bottom lunch bag. Put the bags over the speakers when not in use. Being clear I could still see the speakers.

 I raised 2 kids and they never went near my speakers. Now I have 3 grandkids that so far haven’t touched them nor shown interest in them. I told them to stay away, and they abided.
