REL ?s

I’ve had a pair of S/2’s on loan/demo.  Wondering if I’m better spending more for newer or higher models.  If I can get tighter bass, improved soundstage width, space around instruments, etc. I’d go for a higher model.  I’ve searched & read lots on here. If you have experience w s/510, s/550 Carbon specials etc.  please give your .02.  Thanks

my setup:

Chapman T-7 speakers

Rogue dragoN

MW LS-100

Denafrips Venus2 DAC

rkfaberdds

I have a pair of Carbon Limiteds and a pair of Carbon Specials.  They disappear and blend easily if properly positioned and add greatly to palpable bass, soundstage and image.  All in all I think the price difference between these high end subs and consumer lines is well worth it, especially compared to prices of electronics and main speakers.

The S/2s are fine subs, but the new generations are faster, tighter, more responsive. I had S/3 predecessors, the R-328 and upgraded to S/510. The improvement was massive in every way. I have seen but not yet heard the S/550. I'm sure they'll be even better than the now discontinued S/510.

Thx!

Im leaning toward a single Carbon Special to start.  Room is 15’x15’ but open to 1500 sq ft behind listening position.  Need to figure out where exactly to locate the sub-the 2 corners (next to the loudspeakers) are avail., but would the sub from only 1 corner sound imbalanced??

@rkfaberdds

I started with a single SVS SB200 Pro. I was constantly moving it around.  No where was just right until I bought their wireless setup and I placed the sub about 7’-8’ behind me.  Not only did it disappear, I never bought a second one.

All the best.

Carbon specials incoming.

i may try connecting just 1 at first-perhaps 6-7’ behind position A

@rkfaberdds

congrats on the carbon special(s)! We look forward to an update when you have them in place.

Best,

+1 @curiousjim on the wireless for determining subs best placement. I initially put my two carbon specials in the standard beside the speaker position. But my basement suffered from booming corners all over the place and right behind my head as there is a wall behind me.

Switching them to wireless using the REL Wireless system, I was able to move them around until they really did disappear.  Now I have them far off to the side, you don’t even notice their position visually and they disappear sonically.

I also added some round base tube traps in a couple of weird corners, which helped also.

congratulations @rkfaberdds on the new sub(s). Dentist?   I’m an orthodontist in Baltimore.

Yessir, guilty as charged fastfreight.

i should have these hooked up & playing w different positions mid next week..will report back.

thanks all!

5 hrs in and Im blown away.  As many have said on here & YouTube, adding subs-particularly these REL CSs is well worth it.  My chapmans are good to 26Hz supposedly & they sound great, but WOW do the CSs add foundation, clarity, depth, width, space & punch.  Super easy install and integration. Just wow
