Marantz SA8003 Problem

I've got a Marantz SA8003 SACD/CD player that only recognizes and plays the CD layer on hybrid discs. I sent it off to repair at a well known Marantz authorized  repair shop in Southern California. They replaced the laser assembly and when I got it back--same problem. They must not have checked whether it played the SACD layer. I sent it back and they said they replaced it with another and actually tried more than one and they all failed--but the one they left in would recognize the SACD layer about 10% of the time. They said that the current replacement lasers are not the same as the originals. They said they could put the old one back in, or leave the "best" replacement laser in. I opted to leave it in, even though it didn't work properly. Has anyone else had this problem? Note: I ended up buying a Marantz UD5005 Blu Ray/SACD/CD player on Ebay for $125 and use it as a transport to a Topping DAC. I'd still like to fix the SA8003 as it is a much better unit. It probably wouldn't sound any better that the UD5005. I could just sell it as a CD player...

My personal experience with Marantz, starting about 15 years ago, was pretty bad, and I’ve read many a similar tale here.

Other manufacturers may not be perfect, but for a brand with high end pretensions, I thought that Marantz was uniquely awful in CS

Don't get me wrong.  It pains me to see manufacturers that don't offer support.  Especially in the world of electronics, way too much is considered desposable goods.  It's a shame.  Like the other member above, shortly after buying my Marantz Ruby, I purchased a couple of transport replacments.  I would do that with any CDP I valued.

I don't think Marantz is any better or worse than any other major brand it competes with when it comes to situations like this.

Agreed, these days it isn’t reasonable to expect any manufacturer to store replacement parts for an 18 year old product.  That was why I suggested buying used.  Perhaps if the price is low enough you might get one with a few years left on it

So tell me, who does routinely stock replacement transports and provide great out of warranty service  for 18 year old CDP’s??

Secretguy, I agree with you. I spend 10k plus for my Ruby and Sa10 if they broke at least , I have 2 extra original lasers with me.And a good tech to install it. If I did not get the help here at Agon my Sa10 will become boat anchor.Though even other brand are susceptible to laser problem when they are used more often and get old.

I have an 8004 that's getting sketchy. Much as I like their sound, I won't be buying another Marantz product because of the lack of support.

When my 7k marantz sa 10 broke. I got nervous because finding the original laser will not be easy as well as repair guy. Audiogoners was able to point me on the right direction.Good luck .

Maranta has terrible support if your cdp is out of warranty. When I brought my sacd player to a repair guy, they made sure I bought the original laser. They said most of the laser bought online they don’t work. I think the name of the company is Enform in Atlanta . I did have a thread needing help on Agon and I got the help I needed. I bought three original lasers for my Ruby and SA 10 sacd players for back ups just in case.

I had a Marantz, like yours. I liked it's CD sound a lot, tried to DIY, bought replacement laser, successfully de-soldered the anti-static blob, installed, played CD's, and could NOT find the proper fine adjustment of the laser to get it to find the SACD layer.

I knew what to do, couldn't get it. Those pros know what to do, they just can't get it.

I owned the 803 back around 2008.  Good player but it rolled the top end.  I sold if off after a year.

Have you tried looking for a used 803?

The  Marantz SA8003 SACD/CD player was made in 2008. Good chance parts are no longer available.

I have a Marantz UD7007 that has problems. I called United Radio, I gave them the model number and serial number over the phone. The Tech put me on hold for less than a minute and then said, "parts no longer available".
