Steely Dan's first album said it all for my audiophilia: Can't Buy a Thrill. Every time I upgrade, I somehow feel compelled to Do It Again!

Buncha groups in the same genre. I agree with the Doobies. Try also Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Atlanta Rhythm Section (they did "Spooky"), the Eagles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Band, the Average White Band, Chicago, and Foreigner. Probly missed a bunch too. Don't forget Clapton (on the other side of jazz)!

The Doobies Wheels of Fortune / Takin' It To the Streets album has several jazzy/pop cuts - The Manhattan Transfer's Tonin album does all pop cover songs with the original stars sittin' in - real jazzy. Also check out Jennifer Warnes' the Hunter album - and anything by the Bodeans (not jazzy but just great music with a different twistin sound). Also a little known album by Schonhertz and Scott called Under a Big Sky has a pop/jazzy/new age touch - very good and very different - it will not bore you.

Try Special EFX, The Rippingtons, Spyra Gyra. Also you might like Joe Sample, David Sanborn, or Lonnie Liston Smith (earlier stuff). The latter three are more jazz than rock, they are a good transition into mainstream jazz.

A group called Danny Wilson (there is nobody by that name in it) put out two albums in the 80s. The first one is called: Meet Danny Wilson. Can't remember the name of the other. They also have a best of out on Cd. They really sound like Steely Dan, perhaps more pop and a little less jazzy. Their first is very good.

Glen, I've got every Sting and Police album also. Must be the style I'm hooked on.
I can't help but wonder what other less known acts are out there. Maybe all this means I could easily get hooked on pure jazz. Any recommendations?

I would think some Sting music would be in order. How about *Dream of the blue turtles* and *Nothing like the sun* for starters.

PS Saw them live outdoors at Saratoga on a warm July night, amazing music and you could almost taste their contempt for the experience!

I assume you've also collected "The NightFly" and "Kamakiriad" by Donald Fagen, and "11 Tracks of Whack" by Walter Becker. Becker and Fagen of course ARE Steely Dan!
