One more tidbit, if your going to use PoE++ or PoE+++ then cat6a might be better.
PoE means Power over Ethernet and is used to power downstream devices without having to plug the device into an electrical receptacle. Power is sent over the ethernet cable to the device that is capable of using it.
Yes, cat6a is more expensive but is also more "future proof", at least in our lifetimes. Also, consider the speed your internet service provider (ISP) provides to you residence.

I am about to install a CAT 6 cable into my audio room. I am planning on running this cable to my main router which is in another room. If I want to get the best quality signal to a new Aurender type server, is this the best connection to use..or is there a preferred method? Would anyone think CAT 5 would be better..or something else?

Thanks @germay Nice summary. I don't know why anyone would not want to use a 'better' cable for audio. We (I) are always looking for improvements in our sound. EZ to do once, hard to replace. |
Speaking of hard to replace, I’m having a new home built. The builder only uses cat6 cable for ethernet but here’s the rub, they do not allow any subcontractors, other than their own prior to drywall, to run cable plus I even gave them a detailed diagram for the wiring and they still got it wrong. I basically asked for one cable to be run from where the ISP provides service in my garage to a patch panel I will place in an interior closet. Then separate cable runs from the patch panel out to the different endpoints. Well, they ran all cables from the garage out to each endpoint. I was not happy because I do not want my router and WiFi access point in a garage that's not climate controlled and it’s going to cost me a substantial amount to have my contractors wire, in a hot attic in a finished home, as documented. I was a wee bit miffed to say the least. Fortunately, I’m getting the Cat6A cable I want and having them run some high quality speaker wire above the ceiling to where my rear HT speakers will be located. |
@germay I know the feeling. Most of the time unless you really stand over some of these contractors, you will not get the job you are expecting. Luckily I now have an electrician who is also a musician, so he has some idea about sound reproduction. I will discuss CAT 6A with him, which I think should be the best option. |
