Sounds like the knowledge is leaning towards different speakers and your room is treated. Just curious , what is your current tube compliment ?
upgrade what
Hello
My system sounds pretty good but can be a little bright, forward sounding and sometimes lacks really good instrument separation. I have decent Morror cables and AudioQuest power cords. Just wondering which component would you be looking at to upgrade? 1) Denon 1700NE CD/SACD Player; 2) Rogue "Dark" Magnum lll Integrated Amp 3) Focal Aria 948 Speakers; 4) Two SVS SV2000 Pro Subs. I was thinking of better speakers. Maybe book shelves since I have the 2 subs. Thanks a lot.

Seems you’ve got some treatment, well placed too. Previous comments explaining further options there made need to be considered, however? Yep, when you get a chance…experiment with that first reflection point - dedicated panels placed on sidewalls relative to your listening position using a mirror to determine placement, etc. You may already know this. But it does sound like first reflection issues. @yogiboy with other considerations (that are great and I should also try!). But if changing speakers - and don’t want to break the bank - I’d consider also Revival Audio. Their whole range seems phenomenal and definitely compete with more expensive equipment. I’ve the Atalante 3’s and they sound great with whatever I do front end wise. But - of course - the other recommendations are all super excellent! |
"your cdp is a big part of the problem" Absolutely not. The Denon in a fundamentally neutral player. It is not the problem. Remember that elephant? It amazes me how some will buy a bunch of colored gear to correct a bright speaker they never were fully on board with in the first place. Makes no sense at all. |
Hello, Focal owner here. I totally agree with the guys that recommend treating the room first--no matter what equipment you have it will only sound as good as the room. Take care of this first. My COVID project was to treat my room. Because of the supply chain issues I got the various treatments in in batches over time. It was very revealing when I got my bass traps and listened to them for a couple of weeks and then got the front wall diffuser later etc. It gave me a real chance to hear what each different treatment was actually doing in my room. At this point treating your room, even in stages, will be the best bang for your buck. My Focal Sopra's require very little toe in. I have found that more toe in moves the sound stage into the room and less toe in moves it more on the plane of the speakers. Keep in mind that esp. with Focals speaker rake (tipped forward or back) greatly varies the intensity of the highest frequencies. Lastly, if your soundstage is unfocused you are likely fighting a reflection problem. It won't matter what speakers are in the room, physics is physics. If the front wall area behind and in between the speakers, is highly reflective (windows & TVs are the worst) you should soften it with something. I use a diffuser that spans 2/3 of the wall behind my speakers and the result is excellent imaging. Good luck and cheers. |
