Your turntable history

When did you get your first turntable and what’s been your turntable history since then ?

My first 'table was a RecoKut my father had built into a cabinet. It had an Audax 'arm and a GE mono cart.

When I got my first stereo, it included the entry-level Technics belt drive with Stanton cart, circa 1976.

When I was afraid turntables would go extinct, in 1984, I splurged on a Thorens TD-166MkII with two arm wands.  I still have this kit today. I had it modded in 2010 with better cables, adjustable feet, and damping on the underside of the platter.

My wife found a derelict Dual 1229Q last year, and just had it professionally restored with an Audio Technica VM95SH cart.

With a belt drive Thorens and idler wheel drive Dual,  I just completed the trio with a direct drive Audio Technica LP8X with a soon to be upgraded Audio Technica cart.

An overseas relocation means I can only take the LP8X with me to a 220 volt, 50Hz country.

My first turntable was a GE Wildcat suitcase type.  I was 10 or 11.   Then I had several Technics P Mount, then a few with a conventional tonearm

I had a SL7 and SL10.   Then I had a long hiatus.

Got back into it about 20 years ago with a Planar 3 , then a short hiatus

In 21 I got back in, fortunately I didn’t sell my records so I picked up a SOTA Escape    I recently traded it in for a new SOTA Quasar with Full Eclipse package .

That will be my last turntable for a long time    It is a great table

Does a lazy suzan on a weekly dim sum special in a local Chinese restaurant count as a turntable? Wanted to know if I should include it in my list…

My 1st turntable was in a Magnavox console in 1965 or so.

Then 1972 I acquired a Rek-O-Kut Rodine Jr. with a wooden Grado tonearm, not sure of the cartridge.

1979 I purchased a Technics SL-DD33 thought I was doing pretty good. Still have it.

2021 I bought a Thorens TD-145 installed a Grado Gold 3 and thought I was in heaven.

2024 purchased a Thorens TD-125 with a TP-16 arm, moved the Grado Gold 3 to it.

2025 I bought a Thorens TD-125 MKII, added a Sorane TA-1 tonearm and a Hana ML cartridge.

I think I’m done for a while, just a added a Sutherland TZ-Vibe phono stage and I’m pretty damn happy.
