Visited a Store and was shunned

I live in an area where brick & mortar stores are not easily assessable to demo equipment. While traveling for business, I decided to stop by an establishment on the U.S. West coast. My interest was in the Dynaudio Confidence 20 since I’m looking to upgrade from the Contour 20i. I’m not here to name names or throw anyone under the bus, just purely to voice my frustration and disbelief on how I was treated.

I was greeted with skepticism and a general lack of interest in discussing the product. There were two gentlemen working that day and neither had any interest in answering questions or providing a listening demo. As a matter of fact, when I asked to listen to the Confidence 20 speakers one of them immediately said “no way”. Both speakers were on stands sitting next to several amplifiers so it wouldn’t have taken much time to setup.

I was intent on making a purchase that day and having the speakers shipped to my residence, but decided to leave the store based on my experience.

It’s a shame that most of us have to relay on equipment reviews when establishments such as this lack interest in the customers that support the hobby.

Welcome to the Piedmont!  I moved here in 1985 after graduating from the University of Tennessee.  I miss my East Tennessee mountains, but love Winston-Salem.  Not too big, not too small.  Charlotte and the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area are less than 2 hours away.  Lewisville is a beautiful area -- the City Council had kept it from exploding like Clemmons.

Pop me a message when you get here -- I'll introduce you to Chris Livengood, the owner of Ember Audio + Design.  He, his wife Jamie, and the staff are great folks. On the audio side they rep Wilson, Dynaudio, Dali, Accuphase, Dr. Feickert, AMG, Rega, Naim, Hana, Fezz Audio, Moon, KEF, Leak, plus others.  They also sell upscale furnishings by Herman Miller, Knoll, Blue Dot, and others.  Each month, they host a Public Vinyl Night where they provide the sound system and you bring your vinyl.  Usually there is a theme each month.  It's a great way to hear new to you music.  The system is incredible -- a Rega Naia turntable, Wilson or Dynaudio speakers, Simaudio or Octave components.  Heck of a setup.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I am familiar with this same type of social get-together where the venue is a Listening Space in an audio business premises, with the proprietor as the host.

The agenda extends beyond bringing Albums along to be replayed; there were also meetings where attendees were welcome to bring along announced audio devices to be inserted into the resident system. In this system, over a few periods of the day being set aside for Phonostages, through my attending I was able to be demonstrated nearly thirty different Phonostages through out a eighteen month period, and also got the chance to have my own Phon's demoed in an approx' £200K system.

In the same system, I have had the same experiences with pre-amps, power amps, and speakers.

My journey to attend such a get-together was a seven-hour round trip (400 miles).

Joining my local Audio Enthusiast Group has introduced me to get-togethers not too far from home, and a large range of audio equipment, which again certain devices are experienced over a period of time in a selection of systems, as well as being loaned for my own system usage.

The social side is enriching; the change of an audio system can be enlightening, new musical encounters are discovered and wholeheartedly welcomed. What's not to like?

...too much to say too much to say.....
