High Performance & Low Cost

As you know a high quality stereo system is expensive, But if your system was say 90% of high quality you would certainly enjoy it. Listed are a few items that way outperform their price point. I list these so you can get quality without breaking the bank. It is much better today vs 10 years ago for a deal.

AMPLIFIER

Everyone believes tube amp are the best and they are. But vintage are not that good in the under $1K category and I owned a lot. Rebuilt them as well so heard about everything. A Nobsound 300Wx2 amp that is $189 new will outperform up to $1K vintage tube amps. .It has tone controls and phono input. About 40 watts RMS per channel. It does not need an op-amp upgrade either.

TURNTABLE

I owned a few Turntables. Best was Garrard 401. A good TT is a Project Debut Carbon. New is $1K and used $750. I compared to a Pioneer PL-30-K and I did not hear much difference. I was using an AT VM-95ML. The Pioneer is under $300.

CARTRIDGE

I compared an Audio Technica VM-95ML to a lowly AT3600L at $20 new. Not a lot of difference but treble was smoother with the VM-95ML. However,  you can live with the cheap cartridge. It is lively.

@jimbennet In your OP, I can not read anything that suggests this information being shared is intended to be adopted by a time-served Vinyl Source enthusiast.

Your OP and other supplied information, is from my view, more than adequate to be used as a guide by somebody with a limited budget and wanting to purchase a first Analogue Source, or to be used as guidance to purchase an Analogue Source as a gift.

Not everybody listening to recorded music, where the Vinyl LP is the Source, is able to have a Cartridge that costs in the high hundreds through to the low thousands. The same goes for not everybody listening to recorded music, where the Vinyl LP is the Source, are being able to listen to their Vinyl Albums using ancillaries that cost tens of thousands.

Budget constraints are nothing new when investing in a Hobby which is fundamentally a choice for being entertained. No different to choosing to see a Movie at a state-of-the-art Cinema with a restaurant booking made to extend the entertainment period, or alternatively waiting for the Movie to become available to watch on the home entertainment system with a takeout meal. Does one method actually prove itself as the better experience over the other, as a means of being entertained?

Other methods are available to reduce costs, with the ambition to get an upgrade in ancillaries. Commonly, the selected method is to purchase used items. As a recommendation to a novice, let alone a time-served, used items are extremely risky as a means to make a purchase.

Not for some time, but I have had the pleasure to sit in Record Stores which are successful in generating plenty of sales of vinyl albums. Coffee and Cake produced by the store is a sideline attraction, which, when indulging, does enable observations of Customers and engaging in conversation. I am very confident in my stating most customers of the age group witnessed are not at a time in life where their disposable incomes allow for anything but budget purchases.

Opening up a forum dialogue that covers the choices available in these lower-end budgets, indirectly, is the seed planting for new aspiring enthusiasts to hang around and take their hobby to new plateaus of improvement, as funds and experiences allow high-end to be considered

WANT MY OPINION?  - - - The equipment you have indicated I would not classify as true "high performance". As I have mentioned to others, the first thing you must do is to establish a "not to exceed" price point.

If you are planning on replacing amplifier, turntable, cartridge and phono preamp,

(and depending upon your price point). AND, most importantly, your normal choice of listening genre, I could probably make a recommendation that would elevate your listening experience without breaking the budget. Until then, ADIOS!

@jimbennet unfortunately there are some really rude people here. I appreciate what you are trying to do. Don’t give up. It seems to offend a limited few when anyone dares to suggest they enjoy audio equipment that does not cost thousands of dollars.
