Shipping fatigue and your audio habits

Hello my audio brethren. Recently wrapped up some sales and purchases and the reality of shipping is hitting me hard. It’s rough! The insurance, packaging protection, and the very high cost these days to move packages over 50 pounds, and for gear over 100 pounds… yikes. 😬 It has put a serious damper on the buy/try/sell habit I have been operating in for years. It’s good in a way as it helps me squash the audio nervosa 🐛 , but man does it sting to really think about the extreme high cost to do business anymore. Curious how this has affected y’all. For us non-dealer audio nuts:are you finding dealers out there that used to offer really great deals offering less of a discount ? For dealers: when buying large orders from your suppliers, if you can share, what strategies have you had to adapt to to keep your operating margins? For us used audio sellers on a’gon and USAM have you adjusted your sales to NOT include free shipping? Local sales only?

The Amazon effect “I want my crap  and I want it tomorrow and I don’t want to pay for shipping” seems to be running out of steam. Somebody has to pay the bill. For me I have been much more strict on my sales on USAM. I’m not going to eat the cost of shipping all myself anymore, and more generally I’m pausing big ticket purchases.

Good luck out there and enjoy the music!

I think the buyer paying shipping and insurance is pretty standard for a private sale.  I have never had an issue including it, as well as requiring Friends and Family or cash to avoid tax reporting. I'm sure the F/F opportunity will evaporate shortly, further affecting private sales.  I love my dealer but generally do better selling vs trading most things like cables and easily shipped items.  For speakers or big amps I would rather trade them in and pay for the service of a dealer.

It is what it is. I don’t sell much but I’ll overpack to avoid damage. I use Pirate ship and so far I’ve not had a problem. Cheers , Mike B.

I recently shipped some of my my personal audio gear from NY to L.A. along with framed artwork. After having incurred what I thought were rather high prices from UPS given at Staples,  decided to finally give PirateShip.com a try after reading a very positive thread on the service.

Well I can add my big thumbs up too. The 11 items I shipped received from 35% to 47% discounts off the regular UPS ground rates. A power amplifier weighing 38 lbs. boxed cost $55.88 cross-country. I added insurance of $1,000 for an additional $12.00. I also sent a pair of speakers, each boxed as its own shipment of 26 lbs. for $45.08 per speaker; I valued each at $150.

Creating the labels and paying on their site was very easy; then I simply downloaded them and affixed them to the boxes. You can then ship from any UPS store or affiliate, I dropped mine off at a local Staples. All 11 packages were delivered on time or early, none had any visible damage.

It's very important to accurately weigh and measure your packages. If UPS finds you were off you then they'll  automatically charge for any additional postage due via your Pirate Ship method of payment. In my case it happened with was just one box and the additional cost was $1.53. I highly recommend giving it a try.

Pirate Ship  also gives you USPS prices which these days are much higher than UPS. I only use the USPS for media mail shipments anymore, they're still a great value. I've been shipping lots of records up to 25 in a box cross country, and it 's all been fine. That's with using very heavy duty record cartons saved from online retailers. I've also shipped lots of art books, and unless all the edges are secured with the heavy duty fiber glass thread tape, the heavy parcels arrive with seam splits; the USPS system is quite rough on packages. I've found that 25-30 lbs. is really the maximum advisable weight limit even when using heavy duty boxes.

@digmygroove  When you use a 3rd party service like STAPLES or UPS STORES they are taking a nice chunk of change for themselves.  Rates would have been lower shipping direct from a UPS or FEDEX OFFICE location.  Setting up an Account with either of these places also offers a significant discount over just walking in off the street.
