Question about Stax Lambda Pro ear speakers

I have an old pair of Stax Lambda Pro headphones.  The thin foam layer over the diaphragms has disintegrated, so I removed the ‘debris’ carefully so as not to touch the drive elements.

Is it safe to use them without the foam?  Or do I need to have the foam replaced?

Thanks in advance for any educated advice.

You should try to have the foam replaced. You can try using them without the foam, but you may get an electrical shock to your ear if you listen too loud.

I'm not a doctor, but I've had a few pairs of Stax Lambdas and Lambda Pros. I recall that the foam did deteriorate after a number of years. I just cleared the debris out and listened to them as before. I never received a shock, and I used them for years. I now listen to Stax 009s, Audeze LCD-X and Audeze LCD-XC. I still prefer the electrostatic Stax sound.
