Upgrade Power Cord for FM Tuner

If it bothers you, buy a 14 gauge cord at your local hardware store and forget about it.

Actually 14awg can be disadvantageous for source components that use little current.

I have started using 16awg on low current source equipment - its quite interesting - lower noise floor in some instances.

Good quality low cost shielded PC 1.5mm 16awg Gotham Audio I have found to be quite good. I find many of the "audiophile" power cables are quite coloured and not neutral. The biggest mistake most folk make are bigger is better. Unless you have a 30amp outlet and are using ginormous current sucking power amps some of these "audiophile" 4mm cross section cables are probably doing more harm than good.

My reference power cables are MIT Oracle.

Should have been MD wouldn't include  a PC that doesn't meet the requirements for the product to perform as expected.

Marantz 10B, REL Prececent,Scott ,Mac,etc all came with essentially lamp cord but manage to set the bar for FM tuners🤣

As an admitted audiophool myself, I do use fancy cable elsewhere, so just personal experience.

@dover If 14awg is maybe too big, and 18 original maybe too generic, then 16 could be just right? The Gotham Audio wouldn't cost much to find out. Thinking I must once have used an "upgrade" cord on this tuner, later recruited for other use and then forgotten.

I bought some Gotham Audio 85015 to try out on low level components - its 16awg.

Well worth a try - even on some of your other components. They have been around for years and supply many of the classic European manufacturers - Telefunkin, Rhode & Schwartz etc. I wanted some smaller gauge high quality shielded pc’s for my high end MC head amps - and they worked very well.

As an aside I always use power cords 6ft or 2m length. The reason is if you use a short pc less than 2m/6ft the cable is seen as part of the mains power loop, whereas if you have a pc 2m plus, the pc behaves electrically as a spur off the loop.

I was amused recently on another forum where some folk tested some pc’s using lengths of only 1 metre, and I thought - well, you aren’t hearing what the cable is actually doing at that length for the above mention reason.

I also keep all my power cables the same length to keep the paths to ground equidistant, which can help minimise ground loop noise.
