Do room colors affect how we hear music?

Scientists studied how colors could impact how we hear music, and discovered that it can impact our perception of timbre and warmth.  Results were published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America in February of this year.  Interestingly, experienced listeners appeared to sense they could detect differences in timbre to a greater degree than casual listeners.  There was no difference in perception of loudness.

This is another example of the amazing way our minds work.  Clearly, room color does not have any real impact on sound, but what we see affects what we think we hear, not unlike when we switch out equipment and accessories.

I have not read this article and probably won’t , but I do appreciate your question and would like to add something I think relevant. I worked for 25 years in a prison setting that had multiple buildings and a large population. Back in the late 80’s the facility unveiled its new state of the art building. It was 10 stories tall with 4 housing floors that held almost 200 souls per floor. What the designers did was make each of the four floors a different soft pastel color. There was a soft mint green, baby blue , light yellow and light pink. I worked intermittently in that building for 25 years and absolutely believe that those colors provided a calming soothing background. A few years in they sprayed extensive acoustic absorption on the walls and ceilings and in the evenings went to soft low level lighting. I definitely noticed the change in behavior when they addressed the acoustics and later the lighting. I know this is off topic but I absolutely witnessed a change in behavior based on this. In reflecting I can totally see it changing the audiophiles mood which would change his receptiveness to music. This will be interesting to hear what people say and thank you for your question. Regards , Mike B.

I’m sometimes wish I could have some of the rooms I see in the Agon. They just look so calming and peaceful 😌. No wonder some of them get lost in the music. 🎶.
