I would recommend Harbeth speakers within your price range; in my experience, they are not so great at rock and reggae as I'd like, but they are awesome for classical and jazz and more acoustic music.

Wow there are so many choices to pursue.  I heard bog Klipsch horns driven buy Wavelength amplifiers using 300B tubes playing classical music it was just fantastic sounding.  I also remember hearing a wonderful system of Sound lab electrostats with Futterman OTL amplifiers, like 36 tubes driving the speakers and the sound and realism was pretty memorable.
