I've had it with cables!!

My home theater system has 6 separate network devices:

  • Roon endpoint (Pi 5)
  • TV
  • Steam game repeater
  • Receiver
  • DVD
  • Roku

So feeding them all via Ethernet has required an 8 port Ethernet switch, and lots of extra cabling.  I’m done, done!!! I’m ripping out all the Ethernet except to the Pi 5. Everything else I’ll either use with the Wifi I have now or add an Asus Mesh extension point.  I’ll let you all know how that goes.

Of course it isn’t just the ability of connecting a cable from the wall to the switch and the switch to the devices, it’s also about hiding it all in a modest and sparse living room.  It’s not worth the hassle. I’m going to make this work.

PS - To anyone doing similar work, strongly recommend you get a free (as in beer) Wifi analyzer.  They make them for phones and laptops. They help you see channel contention and signal strength so a great way to see what to expect, whether you need to move Wifi channels or add an access point.

Good luck. It will be interesting to see how it works for you.

Agreed on a WiFi analyzer.

Welp,  of course nothing is that easy. Who knew that the Anthem MRX 540 receiver only does Wifi if you connect via Google Home? There’s no dedicated Anthem app, and no way to configure Wifi without Google Home. Well, that makes perfect sense for a toaster or a coffee maker.  Are you a toaster Anthem MRX 540?  Does Anthem in Canada do kitchen appliances as their main gig?

After 5 tries I finally get it and Google home to complete a setup.  Made the mistake of turning on auto-updates.  This morning it attempts to flash the firmware and gets temporarily bricked.

I ask Claude.  The solution is easy:  Hold down Setup and Power to 10 seconds after pulling/inserting the plug.

Oh, wait, no, wrong instructions.  It’s MENU and Power.

OK, still bricked.  Oh, wait, you have to unplug all HDMI cables first!

How could I have been so stupid to forget this routine bit of advice.

Let me tell you dear readers, neither Claude nor OpenAI got the instructions anywhere near right.
