Why do they do this?

Me, I figure they know it's over priced.

@greywolf - I know what you mean. I never 'contact them for price' - I want to see a price. And yes, in some cases it's to do with manufacturers and discount policies, but in other cases I wonder. 

Either they are not allowed to put their price not allowable by the manufacturer. 

Can also cutdown on "Window Shoppers" or "Tire Kickers" that are complete time wasters.

If some manufacturers knew the large discounts a store offers then that establishment may lose the line. (This is what I've been told by several places). 

I too find that stilly and obnoxious. It makes me immediately lose interest and scroll on. What are they hiding. Is it a bait-and-switch? Gray market or "hot" goods? Perhaps they're looking for people to rope into an MLM scheme? Or more likely they're trying to size you up to gauge how much you're willing to spend (market segmentation).
