Rel Subwoofer phase question

When running 2 REL N31 subwoofers is it possible that the phase of one Subwoofer is different than the other and still be correct in phase with the main speakers. To put it another way can the phase of the left sub be in phase 180% with the left main speaker and right sub be 0% and in phase with the right main speaker. I’m getting a headache trying to figure out if this makes sense but any help would be appreciated

Probably not. If they are it kind of indicates that your left and right sides could be wired 180 degrees out of phase and at the very least your two subs are 180 degrees out of phase.

It's pretty challenging to phase align speakers without the aid of a RTA. Even subwoofer frequencies are a very short fraction of a second long.

The phase setting of each sub is dependent on their location in the room relative to your listening position.  So depending on where they are located, they might be both set the same, or they can be set differently.  In my last large listening room, mine were set differently (both my large REL's and my Martin Logan Descents) as verified by REW.

Since REL's only have a 0/180* setting, sometimes either setting might not be quite right and when using REW, you can see a hole or a peak somewhere in the frequency sweeps.  But, you can try just moving the sub that's causing these issues just a foot or two in the room and fix those issues, even while leaving the phase setting where it was in the *better* setting, (not necessarily the perfect setting before physically moving the sub.)

this is correct ^^^

that’s why one shouldn’t mainly theorize, but actually try it in the room to get it right sonically

+2 @paradisecom @jjss49 .  Sub location in the room is what determines proper phase adjustment.  Obviously make sure the wires are connected in phase.  If using the high level REL input, this means at the source end.  Yes , while REL adjustments are 0 / 180 vs completely adjustable, it does make it easier to hear the difference with your ears, and not constantly fiddling with phase.  I find it enough to adjust the low pass filter and volume once the phase is set.  Nice subs @hiendmmoe!

I have got brand new speakers that were wired backwards. Yes, it's possible. Don't worry about what things are set at, worry about how they sound. If they sound better out of phase, then run them that way.

House wiring can be out of phase, the plug can be out of phase, the internal worker can be out of phase.

Focus on sound, do what sounds good.
