Uber Amps - Are they worth it?
This was very well done I thought and struck a chord with me.

I love uber amps, I truly do, but I also recognize that a market is in large part brought on by uber-speakers which are unnecessarily hard to drive. Some speakers, like electrostatics, just can’t be made "easy to drive." I get that, but I think we over-value hard-to-drive speakers as if being hard to drive or discerning of amplifiers IS a goal. A speaker which is "discerning" of an amplifier is NOT in any way more musical or transparent or better to listen to, IMHO. They are separate attributes. Take super easy to driver speakers like Fritz. An uber amp doesn’t make sense, and I’d spend my megabucks on a fantastic pre instead. |
This is like asking if a $50K country club initiation fee is worth it, or monthly dues, or paying for a gym membership while never setting a foot inside the gym. Car payments? Property taxes vs renting an apartment? People spend money on all kinds of things, why stop at uber amps. And who cares is my amp is more expensive than my car. At least it will not be worth $200 in ten years - like my car will. |
