A small word of caution from a true-crime enthusiast - make sure you can trust whoever the guy(s) are that help you move your amps or other equipment. Too many stories of somebody that saw something they wanted, or happened to later mention your expensive things to some cousin that just got out of jail. I realize most have insurance coverage, but just saying..
What do you like about your integrated amp?
So, the other day I was moving my ARC REF 75 amp to clean the insides, along with the shelf it was sitting on, when suddenly I felt a stabbing pain in one of my obliques, as I was twisting my body.
Shouting out a quick, "Oh f***," my wife said, "What are you going to do when you get older, and can't move the amp?" I have periodically wondered that myself, since I am just shy of 71.
As the discussion title says-what do you like about your integrated amp? It's a wide-open query because I'm thinking if I'm going to consolidate my equipment, let's see what's out there? I'm partial to tube equipment and have enjoyed Audio Research for almost 30 years. Does that mean I should get an ARC integrated? Maybe, maybe not.
FTR--I listen to lots of jazz, folk, classical, not that much rock beyond what I grew up listening to-Beatles, the Dead, the Stones--stuff like that. I have a pair of ProAc 30Rs, an Aurender server, and an ARC CD6SE.
All your comments are appreciated-
David

Just updated my profile with the Rotel a8 and Dali Oberon 5s I recently added to my current collection. The Rotel weighs 11 pounds and the Dalis 24 something. @elliottbnewcombjr’s Luxman SQ-N150 is the most refined integrated here I think, since I lived with one for quite some time with Klipsch Heresy IVs and it was just a lovely player all the time. Had excellent trade-in value too when I switched up to the Luxman LX-380 which has become a very rare and elegant machine. Since were all boasting. |
Thanks for the many responses/shared experiences/insights/recommendations. Yesterday, while exercising I listened to a Grateful Dead podcast where they told a story how their "Wall of Sound" was driven by 48 McIntosh MC2300 solid-state amplifiers, delivering around 29,000 watts to over 600 speakers. Each amp weighed around 130 lbs. Many of you mention a challenge created by using an integrated that will be under powering my speakers. I have ProAc d30R that are rated at 89 db, 10-200W, with a generally flat response/neutral sound profile. I think an amp delivering 20-30W could drive the speakers, when paired with a subwoofer, or two. With that said, mono blocs have been recommended more than once, and that's something I didn't think of. I know about Quicksilver mid-mono blocs. Any other tube-based mono blocs you know of/own? I have also purchased one of these- https://xpower.com/shop/a-2-airrow-pro-multipurpose-powered-air-duster/ Thanks again! David |
