What's Wrong?

I use an Amazon Firestick in one of my AV systems and cannot figure out how to get audio directly to the TV so that I don't have to use the AVR for audio when I don't want to (mostly news programs). Because the TV is wall-mounted, the only way to connect the Firestick directly to an HDMI input was to get a 90-degree HDMI adapter, which I thought would take care of the problem. I am getting crystal-clear video, but no audio at all, period. I have the Toslink output on the TV connected to the AVR, and everything's crickets. Any suggestions on this dilemma?

Go into the menu of the TV and make sure the "internal speakers" are selected.  Also make sure you have the correct "digital output" selected too.

You need to tell the TV where you want the signal to go.

Both of those suggestions are good ones, but there was no audio problem until I connected the Firestick directly to the HDMI input. The Toslink feed was working fine before, both when the Firestick was connected directly to an HDMI input on the AVR, and when it was connected to a Blackbird HDMI switch that has audio extraction (with its own Toslink output). I get no audio regardless of whether the TVs speakers are selected or not. I will go into the TV menu to double-check the audio output settings as that could be the bugaboo.

2011 Panasonic - never had any HDMI issues before and Fire Stick worked with no problem when I had it connected to a Blackbird HDMI switch for a brief period recently. I have moved a newer Samsung into place and will be hooking that up tomorrow. The Samsung is the reason I got the Blackbird to begin with, because it does not have an optical output, which causes all kind of issues I won't go into here. But my main goal is to get sound without having to use an AVR, whatever that takes. The Samsung is very limited on connection options.

Well, mahler123, you may have been on to something as far as the HDMI issue was concerned (or not).....after connecting the Fire Stick directly to the Blackbird switch and then connecting the Blackbird's HDMI output to the Samsung TV, I now have audio through the TV speakers. The switch has a second HDMI input port, and I am trying to figure out the correct procedure to connect the AVR's output in order to have video/audio feed from the AVR. My first thought is to connect the AVR's HDMI output to a second HDMI input on the TV, then toggle between those inputs as needed. Thanks to those who offered tips in this maze of issues.
