Ortofon MC X30 broken cantilever - what are my options

Like the responses before me, Ortofon has a very cost effective exchange/repair policy of 25% (cost effective because of the retail price of your given cart) of retail giving you no reason not to take advantage of it over sending it to a second party repair place. Now if this was a higher priced Ortofon then there are some very good after market repair places that do excellent work. Just remember that Ortofon does not require you to be the original owner and they will honor their replace or repair policy regardless. Looks like your cart retails for $800.00 and has the fine line diamond stylus and an aluminum cantilever, so should cost you $230.00 including shipping back to you. Enjoy the music

That is a wonderful option Ortofon offers - wow. 

I am not sure where the math comes from for final cost in another post. But that cartridge looks like it has a MSRP of $779. So 25% off is $194.75. That is a net cost of roughly $584. You don’t get to replace it for 25% or MSRP. 

There are quality retippers who would do this for a more affordable cost, and they do excellent work. Consider Expert Stylus, All Clear, or Garrott Brothers, and even Goldring. 

The other option is to reach out to your retailer and see if they will be kind and sell you a replacement for a reduced cost. Because these things happen to customers. Now if this is a manufacturer defect and not user caused, it can be covered under warranty. It needs to be inspected by Ortofon USA though. Sometimes they will show grace also, especially if there is not a sign of obvious catastrophic abuse. But that is not guaranteed. Now if there are no other signs of damage they should replace it under warranty. But until inspected, there cannot be a decision.
