The 212se was replaced by the newer/upgraded 212sx in 2022 I think - do not know the technical differences and yes, the cost was quite higher...also do not know the technical differences with the new, just introduced 212...

@ronkent well if you have done pragmatic room coupling of the subwoofers I don't think you would be having upgradeitis |
The truth is i am very happy with the sound and have no complaints or issues. I know however from being deep into this hobby since i started in 1975, that there is always room for improvement. Don’t know how that would sound until i hear it and thus am always on the lookout for things i could do to improve the sound and the enjoyment factor. |
I never had a 212, nor claimed to. But that would have just been bigger subs in the same room. A REL line array is a different animal. I didn’t need more bass, so the 212 wasn’t considered. I wanted better bass and better space (soundstage), and that’s what a REL line array accomplishes. The REL web site has several articles about the six-pack and line arrays. Might be worth your time to seek those out, before you go to the trouble to trade away your S/812s. They can form the foundation of a line array. The 212 subs cannot. My four pack of S/510 worked great. Recently, I made it a six-pack and that’s amazing. I’m rediscovering a lot of my record collection now that I hear so much improved soundstage and ambience from recordings. |
I thought the idea of of 212 series was that it’s like a built in line array with vertically arranged drivers giving the bass an added height dimension. I this the new one has 4 drivers including backwards firing. truly, if you call REL, they will recommend the right pairing for your setup. Interestingly they do not always suggest bigger (higher model) is better. id be interested in what you select and how it turns out. At CAF, I saw the borresen M2s partnered with their 4 driver dipole bass modules. The difference with and with the module was incredible. After hearing it with the module, removing it was quite a disappointment, even at the M2 level.
