Heavy cart on Technics GR
I’ve had this issue since I bought the cart but now I’m determined to get it set right.
I’m running a Phasemation PP-500 on Phasemation’s top end shell on a Technics SL1200GR (early version).
when I go to level the arm, even with the heavy aux weight it still doesn’t float. The cart end seems too heavy for the counter and aux weight to float the arm. So I set them all the way back to be as close I can guess to be, but then when I zero the knob and then the knob and weight to 2 grams it’s o my .25 grams according to my scale.
I'm told these carts have been used by Technics at shows so clearly im not doing something right. Sounds good to me but I want to make sure im not mashing the cantilever and suspension.
According to Technics: "Applicable cartridge weight when using the supplied auxiliary weight: 10 - 16.4 g (not including the supplied head shell.)" Phasemation says the PP-500 cart weighs 11.3 g. Are you using the Phasemation CS-1000 headshell? That weighs 13.8 g, according to Phasemation. So you can see the problem. |
@cleeds yes and now I know that heavier aux weights are a thing. I have a set coming to me. |
@cleeds @gochurchgo It is possible that there is a mismatch at play, but with heavier aux weights the setup of the counterweight’s center of gravity will be closer to the pivot. This is known to change the effective mass calculations and possibly leave us in a place that the resonance is more appropriate. |
