Hopefully to someone who really appreciates amazing imaging & how "boxless" a box speaker can sound.

Reporting back that I had two members with Thiel 3.7 come by Thurs. I'll leave it to them to express their experience/findings., We listened to the CS 7.2 with Krell amps. The 7.2 were in stock form as I'm awaiting the caps to arrive for notch filter that Tom revised. To recap, as this is a long thread, this filter is in many of the Thiel's including the 3.7 and 2.4. These models were sold at a certain price point so electrolytic caps were used to hit that price point. Converting to film caps, with Tom's bypass cap, will be a great thing for Thiel users who have speakers that implement this notch filter. Space constraints is the hurtle to overcome in existing cabiinets. To convert a film cap of similar value to an electrolytic is easily 10 times the size. In the 7.2 I have 4 per channel so you run out of real-estate real quick and we are just getting started. I'm opting for an outboard crossover as it addresses so many concerns. Albeit at a higher cost but I am wanting performance as I am hanging onto the 7.2. A set of mid level speaker cables in most cases would set you back further than an outboard crossover. I don''t think it could be argued which would yield greater sonic gains. I'm not at liberty to divulge what Tom's design consist of but will say the option to have Cu (copper) foil caps in Thiel's should get even a eunuch excited. The weight and fullness with the added realism that Cu contributes has me moving my chips to the center of the table. All in.

@duramax747 , I’m quite interested in these developments. I’m curious as to how you plan to use such an external cross-over? Will it be encased? Where will it be placed? Before or after amplification? |
Unsound Great questions. I know Tom has a few options that are fairly cost effective to mount external crossovers. That most certainly will be the path for Thiel Renaissance. For me Im going to reengineer the top section of the Thiel CS 7.2 with it's front slope and make an enclosure for crossovers. Is it cost effective? No. Is it something I want to do as I feel the look will not look like an afterthought. Yes, I believe so. A full 7.2 crossover will take some space. |
