Used Bookshelf up to $3k

I think the Dynaudio Special Forty's are smooth, and am sure the Fritz are nice as well.  But I would watch for the Dynaudio Contour 20i's used, in the 3K + range with awesome dedicated stands.  They are better.  They shocked me, so much so, that i immediately watched for and bought their top line Confidence 20's.  Pretty nice to have stands that screw to the base of the speaker and are designed to enhance the sound.  I never got stand mounts, but do now, in the right setting.

Owned two pair of Merlin TSM to include Black Magic.  Have you the Zoebel master caps on the back?  That will improve them.  Mounted on decent massed stands?  Do you run a sub?  These all contribute to performance.  The sub addition really improved imaging.  Strange, I know.  Merlins are a treasure.

Don’t think B&W holds the answer, especially for 3K.  Good hunting.

Kef R3 Meta and Revel M126Be are good choices.

My Merlins are on a bookshelf, but plenty of air around them. No room for stands. In my case, not much choice. Sound is quite good IMO.

Before space limitations, I was in love with a pair of floor stander JTMs by Carolina Audio. I could listen to those all day.
