Have the itch yet again. $5-6k budget for floorstanders.

Well I've owned around 20 floorstanders over the last 30 years. Ridiculous I know but for me that's the hobby: trying new gear every 1-2 years. Anyhoots currently have Zu DW6 Superfly in my main rig, Wharfedale Evo 4.4 in the small TV room. Have both tube & SS amps I rotate. Yesterday I sold my SVS Ultra Tower (the prior version) ergo gots me thinking, so fun to go shopping, no? I listen to mostly jazz, on vinyl & via Qobuz. Some beats also (downtempo/chill). I used to rock out  but nevermore. Prefer to stay under 100lbs; not getting any younger. I do have a SVS sub the SB 2000 pro btw.

Here's my short list:

  • SVS Ultra Titan
  • MOFI 888
  • Dali Opticon 8
  • Cornwall IV (rich buddy downsizing)
  • Goldenear T66 (owned the orig Triton One way back 2013, dug them, had to downsize for a move)
  • Dyn C2 (wildcard, never heard em, wish I could audition)

Anyhoots, who wants to chime in?

Many brands listed here are midfi with over etched highs. Look for used Proacs, or Spendors for nice mids and smooth highs.  Check the build dates with the manufacturer....I would not recommend 20+ year old speakers unless you like to replace surrounds.  Old KEF's sound harsh to me.  B/W are tipped up after the N series.  I have owned both.  My recent used Proac D2's for a vaca house are sweet.  The bigger Proac floor standers are nice as well.  Maybe it is just me, but most SF speakers sound a bit dull, especially with McIntosh gear it is often paired with.  +1 for the ribbon tweeter Proac D30R mentioned above.  People also say smooth things about Totems and ATC

Just bought a used pair of KEF Reference 3 floorstanders in your price range. Wonderful speakers replacing my R11’s. True Hifi speakers. 110 pounds though. Had a couple younger neighbors bring them into my house and up the stairs. Gave them each a bottle of macallan for their help. Relatively easy to move when up there. I am 73. Highly recommended.

+1 for the Wharfedales ~ I've owned four pairs, and still have two of them; the Super Lintons are my current reference speakers.  I've always been amazed at the SQ/Price ratio, and have never been disappointed in any of these speakers.
