Just Get A Better DAC?

I see that many of you are adding clocks, DDCs and whatever other boxes for better digital.  To those of you who have done this, do you think it would have been a better investment to just buy a better dac?  I realize that it may be financially easier to add pieces one at a time, but I was wondering what those who have done it think. Plus, less boxes and cables, which is a blessing, IMO.  I guess this would also apply to those putting boxes in front of their streamers.

The only downside to owning the Aurrender N200 is it only has USB or RCA outputs and when I emailed the company,  they said that USB is the best and they built their units with that option in mind.  They isolated this and tweeted that and it was the best, period.

I thought about getting a DCC so I could use I2s, but decided it would just put more stuff in the signal path and never moved forward.

I personally would since in my experience I2s has always given me better results than USB.

I hear you. My Innuos ZENith Mk3 only output is UBS, so I know what you mean. And Vlad from Audio Mirror who built the Tubadour V told me his USB connection is the best one to use. Guess what, the Innuos connected directly to the Tubadour via USB is CONSIDERABLY inferior to I2s via DDC. Go figure. And that is in a well built and treated room. Obviously my ears are completely different from the ones at Innuos and Audio Mirror, and at Aurender too from the sound of it. You'll never know until you try it.

Not when properly deployed as in devices by Mojo, LessLoss, Lampi, Mola Mola and other quality DAC's..

Very likely I'll never use usb connection to dac again, usb is extremely compromised interface

USB is fine. I had amazing results using high quality USB cables between high quality components. That’s key. For USB implementation is key and DAC clock is critical.

The quality you get from USB vs other interfaces is highly dependent on your streamer and DAC. I have tried AES, coax and USB on my main system, and they were very similar with a slight advantage with AES. But if you have a relatively better DAC than streamer USB can easily be superior. So... like most things in audio... it depends.
