Lucinda Williams has remained for almost 25 years as a truly original, unique, gifted, unpretentious, singer songwriter with little to no equal. To make an analogy, she is the female Lyle Lovett of folk/country/popular/whatever music. I fascinate at how the recording industry struggles so greatly in trying to put her and Lyle Lovett into a pigeon holed category for their convience of description. The fact that she supercedes music industry classification categories says it all. The very sad fact that someone with Lucinda Williams' enormous talent and virtually unmatched top quality and timeless recordings throughout her career, is not a well known name in most american households explains exactly what is wrong with american modern music. But alas!! Lucinda Williams has a new CD coming out 4/8/03 (World Without Tears). |
Alison Krauss "Forget About It" is an outstanding CD but I just bought a CD by a group called HEM entitled "Rabbit Songs" where I like the lead singer even more than Alison Krauss (or anyone else for that matter). HEM's lead singer is Sally Ellyson and she is simply wonderful. |

Connie Dover is the most under appreciated female artist of our time. She has four albums out. Her musical style includes Scottish, Irish, and early American music.
I recommend you try the title "Somebody" and pay attention to her rendition of "Cantus".
You won't be disappointed. |

I don't know about the absoulte best,but if you like a great mix of vocals,piano,orchestra and precussion, then Vanessa Carlton's "Be Not Nobody" is great. It works well for auditioning equipment,especially speakers because it is a great recording as far as quality and it has some dynamics as well. And the Music is very good overall too. |
I just wanted to add that the singer's voice in Halou makes my toes curl (and in a good way).
I would also add: The Gathering, Lacuna Coil, Tapping the Vein, and Rain Fell Within (these are all metal-with-femme-vox). Alternative-with-femme-vox: Curve, Switchblade Symphony, Tori, anything Nicole Blackman has worked on, Dot Allison, Laurie Anderson (yes, really try _Live at Town Hall NYC September 19-20 2001_), Jane Siberry, Happy Rhodes, Kate Bush, Lush, Lisa Gerrard/Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, Garbage. More traditionally: Jewel, both Coles Holly and Paula, Lori Carson, Lisa Germano (possibly alternative), Alison Moyet (started out more alternative, has been doing mainstream rhythm and blues type stuff more recently). Italian talent of Gigiola Cinquetti, her cd Non Ho L'Eta on WEA label, contains 3 great italian songs + others. Great voice. Poggia is a must to hear if you love Italian female vocalist. |

I just bought Jennifer Warnes "lush life" and once again I must admit I was mistaken... She has a wonderful voice and sings beautifully. In my earlier posting, I recommended Lorrie Morgan's "Secret Love".. She is a country singer and this album is a departure from that and is nothing like her other recordings. Both Dianne Schuur and Lorrie Morgan are strong singers, unlke Norah Jones, which may put some of you off. I still feel that most of you will find it worth your time. |

Patricia Barber, Mary Timmins, Lucinda Williams, and Diana Krall for sure... I have to agree with those who may not play Jennifer Warnes cd's quite as often as the others. |
No one has mentioned Stacey Kent. Sings a song the way the writers wanted it sung and has a great band. I love Ella and throw in Natalie Merchant. All very unique voices, but very lisenable. |

Jewel, I can understand your reaction to Diana's previous material. While the reviews of Look of Love have been extremely varied, I think we have a tendency to like or be more attached to our first exposure to something special. Look into Jacintha's three releases as well. Have fun.

200+ Responses to this thread and no mention of Linda Eder. NOT her latest(Gold), although it is still good, but the two before this one: "It's Time" and "It's No Secret Anymore" She has a voice like no one else. Her vocals are backed by an energetic orchestra. Very few recordings this much fun. |
Hi Gunbei - I received the CDs yesterday. One thing for sure, the sound quality is great in all of them. But for my more big city, upbeat and funky taste, they all seemed too much of an aquired taste, too moody.
"Songbird" Eva Cassidy - nice but won't get a lot of play.
"Modern Cool" Patricia Barber - the best among these, funky and the recording quality is better (20 bit) than the rest.
"Famous Blue Raincoat [IMPORT] Jennifer Warnes - Paid the most ($19) liked the least. I can do rock/country at someone else's place, not mine - this is both or I think this is the one.
"Belly of the Sun" Cassandra Wilson. Great voice, I'll probably listen to it every now and then.
Stuff I bought based on recommendation here, I liked Dianna Krall's "Look of Love" the best.
I'll go through the "Classical" recommendations next. |
So I'm sure a bunch (all?) read stererophile, and this month they reviewed a ABSOLUTE WINNER in Noarh Jones. I actually picked up this CD about 2 months ago, when it first hit the stands. I go to the Music dept. of Borders frequently, and they had it at a listening station. This is a very good CD.
You may also want to check out Gillian Welch (the first CD is the best one).

Dianan Krall is one of my all time favorites as well, but I actually prefer every CD previous to "The Look of Love". Definitely have a listen to her earlier stuff. Haven't been a jazz or a classical officianado by any means but based on recommendations here, I went and bought a Dianna Krall CD "Look of Love" - listened to it for 3-days straight, for the music and for the recording. I just put in a order for the following. Hope they stack up to DK:
