Harbeth 40.3's. Should I buy them?
@desalvo55 saw these and thought of your requirements, amp, room size, budget. No affiliation, as a hobby builder myself, appreciate the design, parameters, in your case. Something else to throw another hat in the ring, next to Vandersteen. Ma...
ScanSpeak Ellipticor-A50-II (anyone build them?)
@kenjit Much of it is being made in chinese factories thesedays so the excuses about factory and labor costs are simply not true.   Sure, for those products made and manufactured in China, that’s great. And, for the handful made in the USA, ...
ScanSpeak Ellipticor-A50-II (anyone build them?)
"The poor speaker companies. They must be doing all that work for no profit. Perhaps they should increase their prices so that the poor workers can afford to put food on the table?" ------------------   If anyone here believes there is a nota...
Digital coax cables
@boxcarman for your reference, a month ago just for grins I had a 5yr old AQ Cinnamon Digi Coax sitting here, and swapped it back in play to compare to my other Analysis Plus Digital Crystal and my Cardas Digital Clear Digital coax. It was a fun ...
ScanSpeak Ellipticor-A50-II (anyone build them?)
@smodtactical are you referring to Troel's version of this kit? If so, you can be rest assured it will sound phenomenal.  While I've designed and built my own speakers in hobby form over 45 hears, and a professional builder prior in my younger yea...
Harbeth 40.3's. Should I buy them?
@desalvo55 which T2000 do you have, the 25th came with KT150s and 30th anniversary comes with KT170s, or some older model? Both of these later amp units should be fine in Pentode mode with the H40.3s at moderate volume levels. Sure, a little less...
Harbeth 40.3's. Should I buy them?
@desalvo55 And the consensus is that the 40.3 is simply too big for my room. Tried it in a smaller 11’x12’ room, I heard the prior 40.2 version on my prior 50wpc tube Triode and 60wpc tube mono blocks. Big transformer amps, plenty of drive. It...
vienna acoustics beethoven baby grand
Having owned the Totem Model One's and hearing the VA Grand, in general you'd be getting a larger sound presentation with the VA speakers. Tonally, they simply sound different. Having said that, helped a buddy my who tried his own crossover upgrad...
What are some good things to do when going to an audition
Familiarize yourself with a particular song track you enjoy, and how it sounds.   Take notes while listening to the same track on different systems, speakers. You can start by simply noting likes and dislikes for each system you audition.
Tube amps - what 3 things…
Features, approach: Confirm speakers used long term Output tubes, ensure availability, spares Quality parts, design, transformers NOs: Avoid cheap junk parts used
Threshold Stasis S/150
@highend64 if you buy/use one of these 30 year old amps, the main power caps and bits regularly get replaced as others have mentioned. Has to do with age, not the condition of the amp alone. Check with different techs in your area, best of luck.
Threshold Stasis S/150
@boostedis Suggesting a Parasound A/B Amp to a Threshold Class A Amp is a poor comparison! Nothing in the Parasound line is comparable, and that is from personal experience with both Amps.   Tend to agree, argh. Had a Parasound A23+ for 45...
Threshold Stasis S/150
@highend64 not validated, worth re-checking, have these notes on the Vandersteen 2CI Spec: ¾ inch aluminum dome tweeter, 4 ½ “ plastic cone midrange, 8” cone woofer, and a 10” active cone radiator that handles frequencies below 35 Hz. Fequency r...
Speaker recommendations wanted for Quicksilver M135 amplifiers
Vandersteen Model 5, 5A were paired up some times with the QS MX-135 amps years back, and forward. Said to be "consequently, can be driven by a mid-power amplifier despite its modest sensitivity of 87db". Also helped by its built-in sub, etc. Wort...
Speaker recommendations wanted for Quicksilver M135 amplifiers
@thermionicemission Rob, your current TC Anniversary shows 8ohm nominal impedance and 90db, how about trying those first?  You mentioned listening 7' away, might be worth a first try, see how it goes, 'eh?
