I got to thinking that I often enjoy rock music that has some piano riffs. While some might mention the early stuff with Jerry Lee Lewis or Little Richard, that was before my time. I was thinking more along the lines of Aladdin Sane (piano by Mike Garson in one take) and Lady Grinning Soul (also Garson on piano) by Bowie, Crime of the Century, and who can ignore Elton John (Roy Rogers, a favorite) and Billy Joel (Piano Man). Others?
One of the best IMHO is Dr. John. He plays a distinctive style- 'NoLeans, but his playing and style is clean and distinctive. His LP, Gumbo. Lots of excellent tunes showing off his great piano chops.
I agree with Oregon's Dr. John suggestion. I will go one step further in the 'NoLeans' rock and roll piano genre and recommend Prof. Longhair. His "Rock and Roll Gumbo" has been a party album in my house for years. Longhair's syncopated rythyms inspired generations of musicians and his style always gets the crowd going.
