Are there any current production great speakers using AMT tweeters?

Back in the day, I had fallen in love with the ESS Heil AMT speakers, which were always too large and too expensive.    Now that I am looking for a new speaker, I am wondering if there are any current high end monitors that use these tweeters?  Or have good ribbons made the AMT tweeters less desirable?

My budget is in the $5k to $15k range, new or used, so don’t tell me about some of the $1k speakers that I know are out there, no matter how good they might be.

Stand mount is preferable, but a floor standing with a small footprint might be workable in my smallish room.

Hello All:

I just Googled it.  AMT tweeters, according to Google at least, are used in the list of speakers below:

High-End Home Audio

  • Wharfedale: The flagship non-heritage models feature advanced AMT tweeters.
  • Legacy Audio: The flagship AERIS and Focus SE lines utilize the manufacturer's signature Dual AMT System.
  • Pure Audio Project: Premium open-baffle speaker lines integrate large AMT tweeters.
  • Audiovector: Features patented AMT tweeters across their high-end lines, such as the Ri71 and QR series.
  • Neat Acoustics: The Vito Classic model incorporates an AMT tweeter into its 2.5-way floorstanding cabinet.
  • Kanto: Active and powered bookshelf lines (like the TUK) use dedicated AMT tweeters.
  • Philharmonic Audio: The BMR Monitors are equipped with flagship AMT tweeters. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]

Studio Monitors & Pro Audio

  • HEDD Audio: Core professional MK2 monitors feature the manufacturer's proprietary AMT driver design.
  • Avantone Pro: Gauss 7 reference monitors deploy GAU-AMT tweeters.
  • ADAM Audio: A long-time pioneer of AMT technology, utilizing X-ART and S-ART variants across various professional monitor lines. [1, 2, 3]

It’s worth noting, repeatedly, that the type of tweeter and the quality of implementation are NOT at all the same.  Nor is the price necessarily.

While I am very happy with my AMT’s, I’ve been very unhappy listening to others as well, so always listen for yourself as both the quality of the tweeter, the overall system design and your room and other gear matter.

The one attribute which AMTs have in common is low energy storage, so in that sense they are as good as the top end ceramic/Be/Diamond tweeters.  However, the frequency response from model to model can vary a great deal.

@toddalin - thanks, but not interested in a DIY. Cool to see that they are out there for those who are.

@oldaudiophile - good info- I had not heard that about the extra listening room space- this might be too big a hurdle in my smallish room.

@lucky_doggg7 - thanks, but notice the limits of google- several of the brands others have mentioned do not show up in the googled list:  Monitor Audio, GoldenEar, Reynaud, gobel.   It is a good start.

@erik_squires - of course, which/how/what the exact AMT tweeter is very important and i am sure there are some that would not be to my liking.    Which one do you own that you are happy with? (Or do I recall you are a DIY person?)

OP:  I built all my front speakers.  My L and R use mid-sized Mundort AMT’s which while I like have more than doubled in price when I bought them and the were expensive then!  There are many excellent tweeters at 1/8th the cost.

I have come to the conclusion that overall we spend too much money on tweeters , and they occupy too much of our headspace.   Even among this brand, which is still used by very expensive manufacturers, Mundorf makes some tweeters with resonances that need to be carefully handled.  That a speaker uses this same model, or brand of tweeter does not immediately buy a recommendation from me.
